William D. Addison

William David Addison

1937 – 2024

William D. Addison, 86, passed peacefully Sunday, July 7, 2024, in his apartment at Jasmine Estates Assisted Living in Edmond, Oklahoma.

He was known to his family and friends as Dave. Mr. Addison was born September 14, 1937 in Norton Virginia, Wise County, to Ford Addison and Nettie Mae McGuire Addison, both deceased.  He was known in high school as “Ace” for his baseball talent and for the rare ability to speak Latin.

After high school and moving to Culpeper, VA, Mr. Addison served in the United States Army as a military policeman in New York during the 1960s, followed by twenty years in the Army reserves in Culpeper, VA. Mr. Addison later worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in Fairfax County as a Highway Inspector for 43 years where he retired in 2000. He enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, playing cards, playing horseshoes, spending summer vacations at Lakeside and Indian Acres, and spending time with family and friends. Mr. Addison was a past member of the Culpeper American Legion and the Culpeper Moose Lodge.

Mr. Addison’s long time love of 32 years, Erma Garr (deceased) and her son, Anthony Waugh, enjoyed a warm, loving family life together spanning 50 years. Marie Perriello Waugh, wife of Anthony Waugh, was privileged to enjoy a warm and loving relationship with Mr. Addison for 24 years after marrying Anthony, and Anthony’s son, Austin, also grew up with a special relationship with him. Mr. Addison grew up in Norton alongside his first cousin, Annette Addison Clough, who was more like a sister to him. This treasured relationship continued between them throughout their lives, and in the last several years, they rarely missed a day speaking to each other. In addition, Mr. Addison enjoyed a decades long beloved friendship with his next-door neighbors, Scott and Tammy Hicks, who were also very special to him. Mr. Addison was a private man who spoke plainly and directly and lived an authentic life.

His character was true and his perspectives on life were honed through his dedication and loyalty to his military service, employment at VDOT, his strong personal relationships with long-time VDOT friends Frank Brown (deceased) and Jackie Jeffries both of Culpeper, VA; his life experiences, and his deep and abiding belief in God – a faith instilled in him by his Mother, Nettie Mae McGuire.

Mr. Addison is survived by three nephews – Buddy Addison, Donnie Addison, and Christopher Addison – all of Culpeper, VA;  his First Cousin, Annette Addison Clough of Norton, VA; half sister, Janice Eskridge of Waldorf, MD; and half sister Peggy Dickerson of Morningside, MD. (His third half sister, Sherry Cochrane of Hughesville, MD is deceased).

Mr. Addison was a special man who will be dearly missed; may he rest peacefully and reside in heaven with the Lord. Per Mr. Addison’s wishes, he will be buried at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Oklahoma.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024 at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
