Stephen Donald Marcus

May 14, 1953 – October 17, 2021

Stephen Donald Marcus died peacefully in his home on Sunday, October 17, surrounded by family.

Steve was born on May 14, 1953, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Abe and Doris Marcus. The second oldest of eight kids, his world changed dramatically at the age of 9 when his parents became missionaries and moved the family to Mexico.

In 9th grade, by then a gifted soccer player and fluent Spanish speaker, he moved to smalltown Minnesota for high school, where he would meet his future wife, Char Miller. He and Char also attended Dordt College in Iowa, and the summer after college, friendship bloomed into romance. By Christmastime, they were engaged. And this August, they celebrated 44 years of marriage.

Their adventures as a married couple included living in 6 states, having three kids, and traveling often. But their favorite adventure together was becoming grandparents to 8 children, including one-month-old Weston Stephen, who recently got to meet his grandpa.

Steve had a long career in commercial sales and marketing, and though he could have opted to climb the corporate ladder and spend more time on the road, he chose to have more time with his family and be their #1 cheerleader.

He also enjoyed a lifelong love of books, soccer, hot sauce, and DIY projects. He couldn’t pass up a good deal, a practical joke, or a fun surprise for loved ones. But most of all, he lived to serve. His neighbors and friends always knew they could count on him for anything.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and his children and grandchildren, who frequently starred in his stories: Lindsey, Courtney (husband Chris, children Maerwyn, Malachi, Asher, and Noah), and Seth (wife Ali, children Levi, Hayden, Graham, and Weston).

A memorial service for Steve is planned for Saturday, 10/23, at 10 a.m. at Our Lord’s Community Church, 11400 Portland Ave., OKC. All are invited to attend. In the interest of protecting those who are immunocompromised, the family would prefer that guests wear masks inside at the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to World Vision’s Mother and Child Health Fund. The family also asks that in honor of Steve you go out of your way to help someone this week.
