Sonja G. Bruce

1939-2024
Sonja Gay Bruce was born on January 1, 1939, in Canton, Texas to Gaston and Francis Coleman. Her parents and her siblings, Mary Sue and Andy enjoyed their time in Canton, but later moved to Athens, TX. Sonja graduated high school in Athens in 1957.
Sonja went to college at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX. While attending college, she met Ed on a blind date and they later married on March 14, 1959. She and her husband moved to Atlanta, Albuquerque, and Denver. In their 4th year of marriage, they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma where she decided to continue her college studies majoring in Education. She graduated from Central State College in Edmond and began teaching 3rd grade. Except for a year or two when she taught Kindergarten, she taught 3rd grade until she retired. She enjoyed teaching and was very good with the students and parents. After retiring, she started an interior design business called Sonja’s Interior Design. She did this several years and really enjoyed working with clients and getting to enjoy one of her favorite things, decorating.
Sonja was a loving and caring wife to Ed and would always keep him in check when he started joking too much. She was a great mother and always willing to help her children with their needs, especially when it came to learning and someone to talk to. She also enjoyed her grandkids by taking them to Chester’s Party Barn annually and having a wiener roast over the fire in the backyard, followed by go fish and bobbing for apples. She made multiple trips to Branson with the grandkids and of course Ed to keep things in line. She attended Henderson Hills Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She made many life-long friends there. She also attended Metro Church and OKC Crossings Community Church which was her final church home. She loved the holidays and had many decorations for each holiday, especially Christmas. During the weeks before Christmas, she enjoyed listening to Christmas music and decorating the house. In addition, she was an amazing cook with great tasting food. At Christmas, the dinner table looked like a Martha Stewart design.
Sonja was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Bruce and her parents, Gaston and Francis Coleman and her sister, Mary Sue Keahey. Sonja is survived by her Children: Mike Bruce and wife Lisa, Melanie Williamson and husband Charles. Grandchildren: John Williamson, James Bruce, Jacob Bruce, Josh Bruce and wife Sadie.
