Viewing will be on Wednesday April 24, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home.
Sherrill was born on December 9, 1950, in Chandler, OK to Henry Lee and Wanda (Merrill) Earp. After attending Tryon, OK schools for two years, Sherrill completed her education in Perkins, OK, graduating in 1969. She developed a lifelong love of horses as a child, and from a young age showed a special affinity for taking care of children.
She married Ronnie Burton in 1968 and to that marriage was born two children, Jeffrey Allen and Marleah Denise. She later married Lester (Butch) Nuss, and to that marriage was born a son, Daniel Gene Nuss.
In 1982 she married Jerry Poston, and along with Jerry’s son Matt, they became a blended family. Over their years together, Jerry’s career with Wonder Bread required them to move several times, including to Atlanta, GA and Kansas City, MO, where she took classes at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. They eventually settled back in Edmond, OK. Sherrill excelled at cooking, keeping an immaculate home and entertaining their friends and family. She had a knack for interior decorating and loved gardening, and always created a beautiful atmosphere in and around her homes. She was always a hard worker, and she had a sweet and kind nature and a gift for making visitors feel welcome and comfortable.
Sherrill’s priority was taking care of her family, but she also worked at several jobs at different times in her life, including at Michael’s and an interior design firm, both of which increased her interior decorating skills, and at Mobil Oil as an administrative assistant. In addition, she developed a passion for working with special needs children, and dedicated countless hours volunteering at Coffee Creek Riding Center in Edmond in their therapeutic riding program. She was always happiest near horses, as well as when she was being of service to others.
Sherrill was raised in the Baptist Church, and wherever she lived over the course of her life, she became deeply involved in a church. Her faith was strong her entire life. She very much enjoyed her time working as wedding coordinator at Creekside Community Church in Edmond. She participated in a jail ministry for women, and never stopped fighting for those less fortunate. She had her own brand of compassion and a knack for instantly winning people’s trust.
Later in life she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, which took a terrible toll on her health. For the last decade she had been confined to a wheelchair and underwent numerous surgeries, and yet maintained a cheerful and optimistic spirit, despite the incredible challenges she faced. She had an amazing determination and strength of will which inspired everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry Poston and her niece, Christie Lynn Brooks.
She is survived by her children, Jeff Burton of Edmond, OK, Marleah Walker of Edmond, OK, Daniel Nuss of Franklin, OH; three grandchildren, Gabriel Nuss, Lily Walker and Haylee Nuss; her sisters Linda (Darwin) James and Denise (Richard) Halliburton, her brother Wyatt Earp and her nephew Rob Brooks.
