Sheila Marie Burke-Gibson

Sheila Marie Burke Gibson (aka Nana)

Sheila Marie Burke Gibson, born on October 14, 1946, in Oklahoma City to Sylvia and Jess Markham, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Nana was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose life touched many hearts.

Sheila graduated from Northwest Classen High School and continued at Oklahoma City University where she met her first husband, Gary Burke. Their union lasted 43 years and blessed them with three children – Kari Burke McNair, Ryan Patrick Burke, and Bryan Markham Burke. Sheila’s devotion to her family was unwavering, evident in the tears, cheers, smiles, laughs, prayers, memories, and hugs they shared until the very end.

In 2009, Sheila found love again with Doug Gibson. In Doug she found her Christian soul mate. Her grace and beauty shone brightly throughout her life, earning her the title of Miss OCU (though we lovingly debate it may have turned into a runner up of Miss Oklahoma.) Sheila’s aversion for legless reptiles was legendary, leading to a specific request for cremation and a celebration of her life.

Sheila’s spirit was as strong as her golf swing, known to leave a mark (really a bruise) with each fierce stroke. A devout Christian since her baptism, she wore her faith proudly as a member of the Crossings congregation among many other small church groups. Sheila’s compassion knew no bounds; she comforted many in times of need with her prayers, hugs and support.

Sheila’s endearing habit of falling asleep during movies was a cherished trait passed down to her children and annoyed by their extended families. Her love reached beyond family to include her dog(s) and a wide circle of friends who will miss her dearly. She was so fond of her many groups through the years that included dear friends in bridge clubs, small congregational support teams, neighborhood dinner clubs, painting, golf, wine and workout groups.

In honoring Sheila’s memory, let us celebrate a life lived with love, faith, and kindness. Though she may have left us early, her legacy of compassion and joy will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace, Sheila Marie Burke Gibson. Sheila is survived by her husband, Doug Gibson, her children Kari and Todd McNair, Kristine and Ryan Burke, Ashley and Bryan Burke and grandchildren Craig, Matt, Jonathan, Riley, Reed, Brandon and Ben; Doug’s children Melissa Graham and Michael McNellis; and their children Jack Henry, Cole, Alexandra, Cade, Blake; and Sheila’s sisters Marsha Gould and Sherry Stevens, all of whom she cherished so greatly.

Memorials may be made to The Crossings Alzheimer’s Support Group – a valued and much needed resource that should be shared by many and has been so helpful. Donations can be made directly to The Crossing Alzheimer’s Support Group, c/o Crossings Community Church 14600 N Portland Ave OKC 73134. Sheila’s celebration of life will be held at Crossings Community Church (the Chapel on Portland Ave) on April 13th from 10:00 am.
