Russell L. Hughes

1932-2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Russell Lowell Hughes, who went home to be with the Lord on November 13, 2024, at the age of 92. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, faith, creativity, and devotion.
Born on July 13, 1932, in Minco, Oklahoma, Russell was a man of deep faith, a kind soul, and a curious spirit. A devoted Christian, he lived his life with a heart full of compassion and a steadfast commitment to his beliefs. His love for the Lord was reflected in every aspect of his life, from the way he cared for others to the wisdom he shared with all who knew him.
Russell was married to the love of his life, Delores June for nearly 70 years. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Their marriage was a testament to the power of faith, commitment, and mutual respect. Through the highs and lows of life, they supported each other with unwavering devotion. Their bond was a shining example to their children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to witness their love.
Russell’s passion for art began early in life. He began drawing at the age of 12, while in the sixth grade, and continued to pursue his artistic talents throughout his life. His first formal art training came through a correspondence course while still in high school. Later, he studied commercial art at Oklahoma City University and went on to become an illustrator for the Federal Aviation Administration, a career that spanned over 30 years.
His fine arts career began in the 1960s when he studied under several noted watercolorists and oil painters. Working in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, Russell developed a distinctive style that focused primarily on Oklahoma and Western landscapes. His sensitive, peaceful paintings of nature touched a responsive and lasting chord with those who saw them. Over the years, his work earned numerous awards and was included in many private and corporate collections across the nation. A member of the Oklahoma Art Guild, he left a lasting impact on the art community, and his works will continue to inspire for generations to come.
In addition to his remarkable artistic talents, Russell was an accomplished pianist and song leader. His home was always filled with beautiful melodies of hymns, classical music, and his own compositions. Whether he was cooking, cleaning, or working around the house, Russell would often hum a tune, usually a beloved church song. He had a passion for leading congregational singing and took great joy in teaching others how to lead and sing hymns. Whether he was playing the piano, leading singing at church, or capturing the world’s beauty through his paintings, Russell’s artistic expressions were always infused with love and faith.
Russell was also an avid traveler, constantly seeking new experiences and places to explore with family and friends. His journeys took him to many parts of the country, where he found inspiration for both his artwork and his life. His travels deepened his appreciation for the diversity and beauty of God’s creation.
Russell is survived by his loving wife, Delores June Hughes; daughter Lorrie Renfro, husband Morris of Edmond; son-in-law John Anderson of Pueblo, CO; granddaughter Mary Pacheco, husband Shawn of Pueblo, CO; granddaughter Christina Edwards of Pueblo, CO; granddaughter Michelle Courtright, husband Keith of Tulsa, OK; grandson Matthew, wife Caitlin of Pueblo, CO; grandson Hunter Renfro, wife Hannah of Frisco, TX; and seven wonderful great-grandchildren.
Russell is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his cherished daughter Cynthia Louise Anderson.
Though he is no longer with us, Russell’s legacy of love, faith, art, music, and devotion will live on in the hearts of his family, his church community, and all who were blessed to know him.
Public visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home.
