Ruby Wood was lifted into the arms of her Heavenly Father on July 9, 2015. She was the first of 7 daughters and 1 son born to Bertie and Grace Bessinger Whitlow on September 21, 1916, in Newalla, OK. She attended school in Shawnee, OK, and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1934. She went on to continue her education at Central State Normal School. There she received her teaching certificate and began teaching in a one room school in Billings, OK. It wasn’t long after that that she met the love of her life Floyd William Wood. They were married August 17, 1941, in Oklahoma City, OK, and began their life together for 37 years until he passed away in Edmond in 1978. To this wonderful marriage 6 children were born in the next 9 years. Needless to say, their house was filled with the joys of children.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Floyd, four sisters, Lucille Harris, Lois Lanier, Ella Mae Stokes and Doris Watson. Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Ruth, two sons, Harold and Glen and one grandson Charles.
She is survived by one brother, Richard Whitlow and wife, Jeanie of Okmulgee, OK, and two sisters, Louise Harris of Midland, TX, and Almeda and husband, Don Carter of Allen, TX.
Ruby is also survived by sons Fred Wood and wife, Judy; Kenneth Wood and wife, Sharon; daughter, Marilyn Crick and husband, Marvin, all of Edmond, OK; daughter-in-law Judy Wood of Tulsa, OK, and Kay Wood. Also 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
More than anything, Ruby loved the Lord, Jesus Christ. It came as naturally as breathing and eating. She was a charter member of the Edmond Church of Christ that met at the old Gem Theater on Broadway in downtown Edmond. Her love of children will always be remembered by her teaching at Sonshine School at the Church for 19 years. She was a mentor, a teacher, a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend to many. She will forever remain in our hearts.
Services will be Friday, July 17, 2015, at the Edmond Church of Christ at 9th and Bryant in Edmond, OK, at 2:00, with interment at Gracelawn Cemetery for a graveside service. Matthews Funeral Home will be officiating. There will be a viewing from 2:00 until 8:00 on Thursday at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK.
We wish to thank the Doctors and nursing staff at Edmond Integris Hospital for the wonderful care they gave our mother. They are truly devoted to their jobs of caring for their patients.
DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS: RUBY WOOD:
Ruby was such a wonderful person to my family . As close neighbors, friends, and most of all Sister in Christ. She was so kind to us .we often stopped by to visit her on our walks. When we did not have a vehicle she would stop by and pick me and my baby boy Andy up and we would go to Bible class every Tuesday morning we often worked in the nursery together and she would watch our son if we needed her to. She was a true Christian that could get through to people. She once finished up a quilt for me that my Mother had started and got to sick to finish . I still think of both of them when I look at it. She will be deeply missed on earth . Was a wonderful example she was to me. I send my deepest sympathy and prayers I know she Loved Christ so much and all the babies.
With Love,
Frances, Maury and Andy KIng
