1931-2017
Robert Lester Henthorn, 85, died on January 10, 2017 at the Integris Hospice House, Oklahoma City due to complications from multiple strokes. Born in a blizzard on March 29, 1931 in Oklahoma City to Lester Henthorn and Helen Gossett Henthorn, the third of four children. He grew up in Oklahoma City except for brief periods in Enid, Oklahoma and Bauxite , Arkansas. He graduated from Northeast High School, where a bookkeeping class prepared him for a long career dealing with finance, beginning with a part-time job with First National Bank while still in high school. In 1951 he joined the 45th Infantry Division, Oklahoma Army National Guard, ultimately spending more than 31 years in the finance section, retiring with the rank of colonel. In 1953 he was hired as a civilian employee of the Oklahoma Military Department, and eventually retired as comptroller, United States Property and Fiscal Officer, Oklahoma Military Department. He was very proud of his guard experience, and served many years as national treasurer of the 45th Infantry Division Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Jack, sister Betty Henthorn Bearden, and brother-in-law William H. Ward. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Searle Henthorn, brother Edward P. Henthorn and wife, Donna; daughter Susan Henthorn Hurst, son Richard Clark Henthorn and wife DeAnn , granddaughters Rebecca Hurst Larson, Katherine Hurst and Amy Simmons, grandson Matthew Henthorn, and four great-grandchildren: Cadence, Ophelia, and Judah Henthorn and Genevieve Larson, as well as special cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, Edmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the music fund at First Christian Church or to the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City.
