Rev. Richard Louis Gremillion

March 14, 1940 – January 25, 2021

Rev. Richard Louis Gremillion

entered this world on March 14, 1940 in Pineville, Louisiana. He was the beloved only child of Louis Joseph and Eunice Edwards Gremillion.

He grew up attending the Church of the Nazarene in Alexandria, Louisiana and was privileged to be mentored by godly pastors such as ET Harris, Lewis Mason, and Louis King. These pastors invested time into young Richard’s life and helped pave the way for the outstanding voice of the Gospel he would become. He answered the call to preach at age 14. God honored his life of obedience and surrender to the Holy Spirit. No one in his family could have anticipated how mightily God would use this young man to reach the lost for Christ.

At age 16, he met the one and only true love of his life, Carol Jean Neuenswander. They were married on June 15, 1959 and enjoyed 61 amazing years together raising five children, pastoring churches and traveling across the nation proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in pastoral ministry, evangelistic preaching, and song.

He served congregations in Effie, Louisiana, Port Arthur, Texas, Lawton, Oklahoma, Vidalia, Louisiana, Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Davenport, Iowa, Duncan, Oklahoma, Lewisville, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as a superintendent position in the Southeast Region of the USA.

His unique gift of communicating and his fiery yet lovingly gentle style of declaring God’s truth rendered him in very high demand as a speaker for most of his adult years. He remained in demand as a speaker up until the time of his untimely death on January 25, 2021.

Only eternity will reveal the souls who came to know Christ, were counseled through life’s difficult times, and discipled in their Christian walk through the ministry of Richard Gremillion. His legacy of loving God, the Word, his family and leading others to a deeper walk with Jesus, will live on through his family and the thousands of others who have followed him in “taking up the cross to follow Christ.”

Richard Gremillion is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol J. Gremillion. Daughters Janet Goddard (Chuck) of Hendersonville, TN, Sharon Plemons (Dan) of Edmond, OK, and Dianne Gremillion Schmitz of Edmond, OK. Sons Daniel Gremillion (Julianne) of Celina, TX and James Gremillion (Cara) of Stoutsville, Ohio. Eleven grandchildren Brent, Ellen, Lauren, Andrew, Jared, Cameron, Zachary, Cade, Caleb, Kelcie, and Karis, two grandsons-in-law, and three great grandchildren completed the family picture and were the delight of Richard’s life.

Left to mourn his passing are many hundreds of precious friends and extended family.

Services honoring Rev. Richard Gremillion’s life will be held on Saturday, January 30th at 10:00 AM at the Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond, OK. A public visitation with family present to greet friends will be Friday, January 29th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. In remembrance of Rev Richard Gremillion the family requests that any charitable donations be made to Evangelistic Faith Missions

    Dear Carol and family:
Our hearts, love and deepest sympathy goes out to you. Richard will be missed by so many people whom he had touched throughout his ministry.
We had a special relationship when we were young, lost touch and reconnected when he and Carol were in Tulsa. Richard will never be forgotten and know he is at peace with the family and in the loving arms of Christ our Savior.

Friends and coworker of Janet and Chuck Goddard, my husband and I did not have the pleasure of meeting Bro. Gremillion or his wife Carol. His guidance as a parent and a man of God surely poured great character and integrity and a loving heart into his daughter, Janet. Our lives are richer for knowing this beautiful couple. We send our deepest condolences to the entire family and all those who loved and cared about Richard Gremillion.

Dear Gremillion Family, Richard was a very dear brother in Christ. His anointed preaching and godly lifestyle have impacted our lives, and the lives of so many across the years. It was with great sadness that we learned of his passing. I shall never forget one revival meeting he had with us. As I entered the study before the service, he was praying for God’s help, and cried out, “Oh God, I can’t do it without You.” I then understood the reason his ministry was so successful. Though our hearts are grieved over losing him here, we have the blessed hope of the grand reunion promised those who are godly, in the future. Our prayers are with Carol and the family.

    Dear Sister Gremillion & family,

This is a bitter/sweet moment for you and all of us who loved Brother Gremillion so much. From those early days in Alexandria (especially the Camp Meeting at Tioga) and Effie to Indianapolis he and then the two of you were always so supportive and encouraging. We shall miss him very much, although not as keenly as you and the children. Just knowing that he was praying for us and deeply interested in the work God was a boost to our spirits in good times and bad. Memories are a gift from the Heavenly Father to help us over the low places of life. You and we have many to draw on to get us through this shadowy valley and out into the sunlight again.

Pastor Luis Aguilera, of Nicaragua, sends his deepest sympathy. He loves you both very much.

Richard Gremillion is a giant of the faith and a true life hero. He was in my boyhood home in Kennewick, Emmett, Denver, Ft. Scott, and Binghamton. He was in my Emmett home on several occasions and I believe he and my dad may have preached a camp together. He was a big influence on my life as a boy and I thought he was the most unique speaker that gave everything he had to relay his message. He was a fun, loving man that enjoyed life to the fullest and I am so much of a better person for having known him. Thank you God, for sharing this man with us. My condolences to the entire family.

  16. Joey and Christina Shutrump

He loved so deeply! One of a kind for sure! Surely he is experiencing the beginning of his eternal rewards for his lifetime of service and dedication with Jesus now! We love you Pastor Gremillion! See you in heaven someday! Thank you for your impact you had on our family and on our lives!

  17. Gremillion Family,

On behalf of the Penn View family and the entire Durkee family, we want to express our heartfelt condolences to the Gremillion family at the passing of Bro. Richard Gremillion. We will cherish the times we have worshipped together at church, camp meetings, and conventions across the country! Bro. Gremillion was one of the great preachers and people in ministry we’ve had the privilege to meet! His passion for God, church, and people was contagious! My family was especially blessed by our friendship! We will miss him, but heaven has gained another saint! Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with each of you!

  18. Jennifer Napier

Dear Gremillion family, I loved Bro. Gremillion so dearly. I remember my mom cherishing the letter he hand-wrote to her when my father passed in 1983. He always cared for people, and it showed. I remember being so sad when you all left the Southeast district of the BMC, and I’ve loved getting reacquainted with Janet when she moved to TN. You are all in my prayers, and while the earthly loss is great, heaven’s gain is so much sweeter. Love and Prayers, Jennifer Napier

  19. Larry and Trisha Jewett

There are friends and – – – then there’s The Gremillions! Trisha remembers as a child being on the Louisiana District with Richard. I met him while in Bible College. He and I worked together at the Oscar Meyer Packing Company in Davenport, IA during the tenure of his mother as Dorm Supervisor at the college. (We would have had to walk to work but his mom loaned us her car each afternoon so we could be at work by 2:00 PM). I have “beaucoup stories” flooding my memory right now. Priceless memories! Richard was always “Richard”! At age19 he was the same as when he went to heaven the other day! Will he be missed?!?!? For sure! How many “Rajun Cajun” evangelists / preachers are there in this world?

And Carol, was always Carol! Always the same steady supportive person through their long marriage and ministry. We will always cherish the times we’ve enjoyed together! Carol, Trisha and I are joining countless others in praying for you and your entire family in the days to come.

May the Lord grant you untold precious memories.

    Your forever friends,

    Trisha and Larry Jewett

  20. Lynette (Harper) Cortez - Broken Arrow, OK

I cannot even count the times that Brother Gremillion showed up at the hospital or nursing home when my father, Charles Harper, went through a myriad of health issues between 1997 and up to his passing in 2014. Brother G’s prayers, his energy, his hugs and tears blessed my sister and me as we supported our dad, and those qualities seemed to always bring improvements and healing for our dad. When our dad finally passed, Brother G graciously preached his funeral and as always, gave us a glimpse of what heaven would be like with his words and his stories. Men like him are rare – always have been, always will be. And I am thankful to have known him and been blessed by his direct connection to our Savior. I just imagine him falling down at the feet of Jesus when he arrived in heaven. And boy – talk about a reunion!! So many of our fellow brothers and sisters are with him now. Kinda makes me jealous!

Will be praying for Sister Gremillion and all of the family as they deal with the missing part of their hearts and learn to adjust to the lack of Brother G’s powerful presence.

Peace be with all of you,
    Lynette

  21. Tim, Rachelle, Jeffrey and Katelyn Smith

    Dear Gremillion family,
We are so saddened that Bro Gremillion has left us, but we know he is healed, happy and rejoicing in heaven. I can hear his laughter now. I am sure he and my daddy are having a time getting caught up ☺️.
My family and the Gremillion family have been friends my whole life and I have been so thankful for the friendship. I have so many great memories of our families together and cherish the friendship today.
Several years ago when Bro Gremillion pastored in Tulsa we went to visit the church there and Bro Gremillion took the extra time to connect with our kids, played and laughed with them. He gave them a toy to take home and to this day they have never forgotten his kindness.
We will be praying and thinking of the whole family today and in the days, weeks and months ahead.

  22. Bennie T. Durr, Sr.

    Dear Carol & Family,
It was a shock to hear of the passing of my dear friend, Richard. Our lives were so intertwined, especially in our younger years. So many memories come flooding into my mind. He was my “Preaching Buddy” since our early teens. I’ll never forget our joint preaching revival when we were 18 yrs old. The advertisement said, “These men are not Novices.” We rode together to Bible School, were “best man” in each other’s weddings, and a thousand other things. We vowed to keep our integrity until the end and by the gra ce of God we have!
Good night, my friend. I’ll see you in the morning!
Our love to Carol and the family.
    Bennie & Viola Durr

  23. Adam Buckler

Bro. Richard Gremillion will always be remembered as an exuberant personality, a loving pastor, a legendary pulpiteer, and one of the dearest men I have been privileged to know! His precious wife is a one of the kindest and sweetest souls…a true lady. The Bucklers, and all of us at Union Bible College & Academy, extend our prayers to the family and join in the celebration of a life well lived.

  24. Linda Merkle and extended Cotner family

Bro. Gremillion was much more than a preacher to our extended family. He was a counselor, friend, confidant, match maker, etc. even a painter. He was a part of our family! To our elderly but spry mother who lived two blocks from the Gremillions, they were best buddies. He often told her she reminded him of his own mother. If Bro. Gremillon was making a hospital call, he would often call our mother to say “Get your clothes on. I’m coming to get you.” Oh the laughter and tears they shared through building a church, building a congregation and building The Kingdom.

His arrival in Heaven is our lost here, but oh what a time up there! We believe his admonition to all of us he leaves behind is “It Was Worth It ALL!” to spend a life serving Jesus and “DON’T Be Left Behind!”

  25. Chris D. Cravens, Conference President

Sis. Carol and Gremillion family; The Heartland Conference of the Bible Methodist Connection of Churches wishes to express its sincerest condolences regarding the passing of your husband and loved one, Rev. Richard Gremillion. Bro. Gremillion was an anointed and powerful preacher! He was a compassionate and successful pastor! He was to me personally, a dear and trusted friend. We are saddened by his untimely departure, while celebrating his glorious arrival! We love you all and will keep you all in our prayers.

  26. Brian & Diana Wardlaw

To all of the Gremillion family, our hearts are saddened and yet our spirit rejoices. We are left to grieve but he grieves no longer! He rejoices in the ultimate victory, we continue the faithful battle for the right!
Brother Gremillion was a true friend and will always hold a special place in our hearts. I could go on and on telling about what his ministry has meant to our family starting with his association and friendship with my father. Don’t you know they are having a time in Heaven right now! WOW!
I will never forget the words he spoke as we were standing at my dad’s graveside, “there lies a true blue man”! Now I can say the same about him!
Please know we are praying for you that the God of all comfort will be with you in a very real way, both now and until our reunion in the sky! Thank you for sharing him with us! Our family was eternally impacted, as were those who attended the camps and revivals he held for us!
    Much love and prayers!

  27. Rob & Theresa Freeman

  28. Ron and Lee Ann Wortham

Carol, you and Richard have been an immeasurable blessing to our family, not just as neighbors, but as friends.

The bond that Richard and Monroe shared was so special, not just in the many projects they would help each other with, but out of your kind and thoughtful care of Monroe, and our family. Some of their projects created memories that will be told for years to come; it is a miracle they did not meet Jesus together years ago!

Richard was there for our family as he comforted us in the loss of our Jean. How we would like so much to be there with you now as you say goodbye to one of the finest men God has placed on this earth.

Richard’s legacy will live on in each of you. May you be cloaked in the peace that surpasses all understanding, as you carry the mantle that Richard left in your care.

Our love to all of you,
Lee Ann Wortham and ALL of the Wortham family

  29. Dear Gremillion family~
My thoughts upon learning of God’s plan….a joyous and yet painful answer to prayers prayed for healing. When it comes to the uniqueness of a human being, when it comes to his ability to worship with abandonment….when it comes to his dynamic communication, delivered with fire in his eyes while punctuating the air with that hand, when it comes to to his quick witted responses expressed with a raspy laugh and a quick turn on the heel….there never was a personality like Richard Gremillion. How he will be missed. My love and prayers are extended to each of you this difficult day.

  30. Marsha Bruning Bujnoch

    Dear Gremillion family,

Your father was an amazing man. He lived a life of service and passion for the Lord. I remember his sermons as a young child and teenager. What a legacy! May God comfort you during this difficult time. Much love to you all!

  31. James and Janet Keeton

A great preacher, man of God and friend. One word to describe him was INTENSITY. He was intense at all that he went about to do. Love and prayers to Carol and his family. He has influenced all of us by his life and ministry.
