Peggy Jane Garvin
Peggy Jane Garvin, of Choctaw, passed from this life Wednesday, May 27, at the age of 79. She died in her sleep in her apartment at the Tealridge Assisted Living Center in Edmond, OK.
Peggy was born in Alma, Oklahoma on January 21, 1941 to Luther Edker Smith and Essie Olene Smith. She was 5th of the couple’s 6 children. In her early teen years she moved to Healdton, Oklahoma where she graduated as a Healdton Bulldog. After high school she moved to Oklahoma City and worked in a beauty shop cutting hair and then, for the state of Oklahoma.
Working in Oklahoma City, Peggy met on a blind date and later married Lee Freeman Garvin on March 7th 1964. Soon after, they moved to Choctaw, Oklahoma where they raised their 2 daughters and lived for more than 40 years. As wife and mother, she was always busy with many hobbies and chores. Helping tend to large gardens, Peggy was often canning and freezing food, making homemade jellies etc. She enjoyed sewing, at times making the family’s clothing, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, ceramics, painting and all sorts of other crafts. Peggy was a stay at home mom for a few years, then later went to work in the finance department of DHS for the state of Oklahoma, retiring in 1997. Peggy attended the Choctaw Church of Christ many years and was always active with church functions. In later years, she especially enjoyed quilting with a group of friends from church.
Peggy is survived by her children: Pamela Jane McCutchen and her husband, Troy, of Collinsville, OK and Patty Jo Yarbrough of Harrah, OK.
Grandchildren: Ashlee Dawn Priest and her husband, Michael of Owasso, OK, Tyler Joel Ray McCutchen and his wife, Azeneth, of Tulsa, OK, Desirae Nichole McCutchen of Tulsa, OK, Christopher Lee Yarbrough of Oklahoma City, OK, Robert Cameron Yarbrough of Harrah, OK, Michael Caden Yarbrough of Harrah, OK, and EmmaJo Nichole Yarbrough of Harrah, OK.
Great grandchildren: The Priest children-Ethne Jane, Abijah Linn, Solomon Tandy Jayhawk and Charlotte Jean of Owasso, OK and the McCutchen girls- Anaya Ray, Lyla Avery, Piper Lee and Zoey Mae of Tulsa, OK.
Siblings: Francis Dee Smith of Franklin, TN and Linda Jo Stewart of Edmond, OK.
Other surviving family members include 5 step daughters, their children and grandchildren, also countless nieces and nephews.
Peggy is preceded in death by her husband, parents and 3 of her siblings.
There will not be a service or memorial at this time.
Thank you to Miss Judy who was a tremendous help to Peggy before she moved to Edmond. Judy’s gentle and tireless service was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Thanks to Tealridge Assisted Living staff where Peggy lived the past 3 years. And lastly, a HUGE thanks to Kris at Matthews Funeral Home for professional, genuine and kind guidance in making final arrangements.
