Mitchell Leonard

1952 – 2023
Edmond, Oklahoma.

Mitchell Monroe Leonard was born in Dodge City, Kansas on December 31st, 1952, to Arthur W. Leonard and Eileen M. Leonard. Mitch was raised in Dodge City and graduated from both Dodge City High School and Saint Mary of the Plains college. Mitch remained a resident until the closing of the family business Leonard Tire, Inc on 2nd street. Mitch owned Leonard tire until its closure in 2015 after 100 years. He raised 5 beautiful children with his wife Virginia. He resided in Dodge City until his retirement from Burlington Northern Santa Fe. When his first grandchild was born, he moved to a small farm in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he raised two wild rescue mustangs and some chickens. Mitch enjoyed spending his time traveling with his wife, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and doing chores on his farm. He loved taking his grandchildren for tractor rides on his big blue tractor and playing in the dirt pile. Mitch enjoyed fishing, rafting, gardening, and drinking his morning coffee. His true passion was his daily chores, taking care of his property, and feeding his animals. He enjoyed taking trips with his wife, with whom he celebrated 40 years of marriage recently.

Mitch is survived by his wife Virginia West, their children Mitchell, Amanda, Michael and his wife Anna, Victoria and her husband Michael, and Matthew and his wife Jorden, and their grandchildren Jack, Wade, and Eileen. He is survived by his siblings Randy Leonard, Gretchen Steffen, and proceeded in death by his Mother Eileen Tenbrink, Father Arthur Leonard, brother Artie Leonard, and Janie Leonard.

Mitch will be incredibly missed by anyone who knew him, especially his family.

    Mitch was a one of kind person, one I have known since a very young kid. We were blessed to live across the alley from Mitch and his family in Dodge City. We played together VERY often as kids. One of our great ideas was to burn a path through a field leading us from Thompson Street to the back of his house on Hart Street…let’s just say it didn’t go as planned, the fire department got it out and no homes were destroyed or people hurt, except the two of us who got in BIG trouble with our parents. In all fairness our plan was to stomp out the fire as we strolled through the field…it didn’t work like our young minds thought it would. While we both got into trouble, this memory remains is one of my favorites from my youth. Mitch will be greatly missed. While we live only 3 miles apart, he at an Edmond address and me at a Guthrie address, I didn’t know until now that we lived anywhere near the same area, how I wish I had known. Many prayers lifted for his family.

    Para los justos, la luz brilla en las tinieblas.
Dios es bueno, justo y compasivo.
    El hombre bueno es compasivo y generoso;
todos sus negocios los maneja con justicia,
    y por eso nunca tendrá tropiezos.
El hombre justo siempre será recordado;

    Salmos 112:4-6

    Rest in peace Mitch

  4. Rest In Peace My Friend. Quite a few years has passed since we played Little League And Babe Ruth Baseball together. It was a nice surprise when you showed up at our motel in Manitou Springs while I was attending the Veterans Rally at Cripple Creek, Colorado several years ago.
