1929-2021

Michiko Kanaya Smith was born to Hideo and Masa Kanaya on January 10, 1929 while her parents worked in Seoul, Korea as traveling educators.  Michiko grew up in a privileged Japanese home with her four siblings until World War II changed everything.

In 1953, she married US Army Sergeant James Pierce Smith, Jr.  They were married almost 47 years until his death in April 2000.  Michiko put her family first.  She loved to spoil her children and grandchildren, loved to shop and loved chocolate truffles.  Michiko leaves behind her four children, Koko (Randy) Hook, LuAnn Hicks, Bobby (Stacy) Smith and Kem (Pam) Smith, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

  1. Very amazing lady! She taught me so many things. Two of my favorite dishes she used to make were Nori make and Curry of which she had the patience to teach me how to create. I will never forget our weekly lunches and shopping trips. Her humor had us giggling together often. She was super grandma to all of her grandchildren, spoiling and loving them. I am so fortunate to have shared life with her. You will be missed sweet lady, rest in peace Michiko.
