Michael Benton Garrett
1947-2023
Michael Benton Garrett of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023, after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and family.
Mike was born on September 13, 1947, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He graduated from H.V. Cooper High School in 1965. Mike went on to attend Mississippi State University where he received a B.S. in Accounting. He began his career in finance with the city government in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, then on to Houston, Texas and eventually settling back in Oklahoma City. Mike was an investment banker in Oklahoma City for many years before transitioning to land development, which he did until his death.
Mike enjoyed traveling and treasured time spent with family, spending many family vacations in Laguna Beach, California. He loved cars, guns, fly-fishing, working out, shopping, collecting art, gardening, cooking, and enjoying delicious food and a good glass of wine. Mike loved dogs, especially his beloved standard poodles, who he treated like his children. He was a generous man and took such good care of his people. He was a man of faith and was a member of Crossings Church. We will miss his easy laugh, his charming Mississippi accent, engaging conversation, his steak dinners, and just simply being in his presence. We are assured that, while he is absent in the body, he is present in spirit, and we will continue to carry that spirit with us.
Mike is preceded in death by his father, Benton Garrett, and mother Elizabeth “Libby” Garrett. Mike is survived by his wife, Ann, of 32 years; children Brad Garrett of Edmond, Oklahoma, Jason McWatters and wife Bronwyn of Van Alstyne, Texas, Jason Garrett of Jenks, Oklahoma, Joyce Garrett of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Sabrina Froehlich and husband Jay of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister Kay Boolos and husband David of Vicksburg, Mississippi; mother-in-law Eva Strealy of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Janet Skach and husband Lenny of Ripley, Oklahoma; brother-in-law David Strealy and wife Lisa of McKinney, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mike has seven grandchildren; Kate, Sydney, Adam, Sawyer, Eva, Paige, and Lyla who were the light of his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Free to Live or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 23, 2023 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel Edmond, OK.
