Melvin Riley Fent, age 90, was born July 12, 1925, in Fallis, OK, to Horace D. and Catherine Elizabeth (Christ) Fent. Following a stroke, he went to be with loved ones on Tuesday, July 5, 2016.

He served in the U.S. Navy spending 22 months in the South Pacific at the end of WWII. After returning to Luther, he held multiple positions over the course of his life including: oilfield roughneck, insurance salesman, owner of the Fent Food Mart, car salesman, transport driver at Tinker Air Force base, and realtor. Throughout Melvin’s life, his family, church and community played important roles. He was married to the love of his life, Mary Ann (Boydston) Fent for 69 years; they had two daughters, Brenda Tytenicz and Darla Fent, and two grandchildren, Treasure Morgan and Shane Tytenicz.

Melvin was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Luther where he served in many roles, including singing in the choir with Mary Ann. Similarly, he served his community in mulitple ways including: sports coach, school board, Lion’s Club, Senior Citizen’s Center, and Santa’s helper.

Another of his joys was gardening; he loved tilling the soil and sharing the produce with friends and family.

Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved, Mary Ann; his parents; two brothers – Richard and Ramon Fent; three sisters – Leona Ramsey Oaks, Ruth Betchan and Cleo McAllister. Melvin is survived by Brenda and husband, Leo Tytenicz; Darla and fiancé, Grant Kelly; Treasure and husband, Danny Morgan; Shane and wife, Luciana; and a host of loving relatives.

Melvin was much loved and will be dearly missed. A special ‘thank you’ goes to the hospice nurses at Mercy Hospital and “The Inn” at the Fountains at Canterbury for their love and care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Luther.

Services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday July 9th 2016 at Luther First United Methodist Church with interment at Luther Cemetery, visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Friday at Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.
