Mary Lou Blevens, a lifelong homemaker and Indiana native, died Friday, Dec. 28, at INTEGIRS Hospice House in Oklahoma City from complications related to a hip fracture. She was 88.
Born in DeMotte, Indiana, on May 7, 1924 to Fred and Frances Cheever, Mary Lou graduated from DeMotte High School in 1942. Soon after high school, her family moved to Linton, Indiana, where she worked at the Rexall Drugstore. Friends there recall often accompanying Mary Lou on afternoon bus trips to Shakamak State Park or to the teen canteen in the evenings.
She was married to Robert L. Blevens on June 6, 1948, giving birth to twins, Marc and Marsha, on May 29, 1951 and to Fred on Sept. 10, 1952. All the children were born in Linton’s Freeman-Greene County Hospital.
The family soon moved to Vincennes, where Bob worked for Indiana Bell and Mary Lou became a career homemaker. During their nearly two decades in Vincennes, Mary Lou was very active in PTA, the First Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She annually helped organize the school chili supper.
Her friends in Vincennes remembered her as exceedingly generous, once giving away many of her own children’s clothes to a family who lost everything in a fire. They also recall her love of music and her ability to sing and play the piano.
In 1968, Bob was awarded a promotion and the family moved to Boonville, where the children continued their educations and graduated from Boonville High School.
A few years later, Bob and Mary Lou returned to Vincennes, where Bob retired and the couple spent the next 15 years splitting time between Indiana in the warm months and Rockport, Texas, during the cold.
Mary Lou lived in the Oklahoma City area the past six years. She resided at Quail Ridge Assisted Living the past four years where she made many friends.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by husband Robert and sister Doris Ferris in 2006.
Mary Lou is survived by daughter Marsha Conner (Robert J. Conner), Edmond, Okla.; sons Marc Blevens (Monica Blevens), Austin, Texas, and Fred Blevens (Charlene Blevens), Miramar, Fla.; grandchildren Stacey Riffel and Matthew Conner, Edmond, Okla.; Robert Blevens, Beeville, Texas; Joe Blevens, Round Rock, Texas; Christy Huttle Whitaker, Portland, Texas; Erica Huttle, Merrillville, Ind.; 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
