Marvel Mate Shorter Brewer

October 30, 1919 – March 11, 2013

Marvel Mate Shorter Brewer passed away on Monday, March 11th, at the age of 93. She was born October 30th, 1919 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma to Elmer and Ella Shorter.

She married Clarence(Cab)Alfred Brewer October 19th, 1940 at Central Christian Church in Enid, OK. They eventually moved to the Washington D.C. area where they spent 35 years. Before having children Marvel worked two years at the FHA, spent time as a Secondary school teacher and worked for a time in the advertising department of the Washington Post. After Clarence retired in 1975 they moved back to their home state of Oklahoma and bought an acreage north of Edmond, OK. Cab and Marvel were members of Waterloo Road Church of Christ from 1976 to 2008.  They made many close friends there over the years and were an active part of that congregation. They considered their friends there to be their second family. For a brief time Cab and Marvel moved to Kansas City, Kansas; back to Edmond, Oklahoma; then eventually to Jackson, Tennessee where they lived the remainder of their lives at a retirement home.

Marvel graduated from Northern OK Junior College in Tonkawa, OK in 1940 acquiring a Public School Teachers Certificate. At age 55 she returned to school at Central State University in Edmond, OK and at age 57 she walked on stage with her classmates and received the degree of Bachelor of Science.  Marvel was an accomplished piano player who had the special talent of being able to play by ear. In her younger years she played the piano in the Christian church and instilled a love for music in her children and in others she came in contact with. She also enjoyed genealogy and provided much family history for all. She was a very loving mother and always put others wants and needs before her own. Above all else Marvel loved the Lord and spent much time every day reading Scripture. She never ceased sharing her love of the Lord and music with all she came in contact with.

Marvel is survived by her son, Ronald Brewer and his wife Diane, of Jackson, Tennessee; her daughter, Shirley Yancey, of Edmond, Oklahoma; her son, Wayne Brewer and his wife Neftal, of Redding, California; her son, Kim A. “Kab” Brewer and his wife Glenda of Garber, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Daniel Brewer and his wife Holly, Christopher Brewer and Clint Yancey; her great grandchildren, Danielle Brewer and Chase Brewer. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence(Cab) Alfred Brewer; her parents Elmer and Ella Shorter; her brothers Wayne and Ivan Shorter; her sisters Florence Hines and Viola McWilliams.
