Lula Richmond

Lula Richmond

1927 – 2019

Lula Irene Richmond (“Mom”), long-time resident of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed from this earthly world to her heavenly home on Monday, December 9, 2019.  She was born October 24, 1927 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Clyde and Edith (Carroll) Roberts.  Mom grew up on the family farm during the depression and learned early on the lessons of hard work and thriftiness.  She worked on the farm, helped her mother and father with household chores and helped clean the church building with her younger brother Preston.  Mom graduated from Strother High School in May 1945.  After graduation she worked in Shawnee, Oklahoma as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Company while her high school sweetheart (aka George (“Dad”)) was serving in the Army and stationed on Adak Island.  Countless love letters were written to each other during this sixteen-month period (September 12, 1946 to January 8, 1948).  Dad was discharged on January 8, 1948.  Twenty-nine days later, February 6, 1948, Mom married her high school sweetheart, George Franklin Richmond.  Mom and Dad celebrated their sixty-third anniversary on February 6, 2011 prior to Dad’s death on July 29, 2011.  Except for the part-time job Mom had at Oklahoma Christian College in the late 60’s she was a full-time homemaker and managed our home.  Jim and I loved that Mom was able to be there and care for us while we lived at home.  Mom and dad were the best parents and grandparents in the world and are now together again after being apart for the last eight years.

Mom’s last church membership was at the Waterloo Road Church of Christ where she supported dad as an elder’s wife in all matters.  Mom’s support of dad as an elder’s wife covered a period of approximately fifty years.  She loved her Church family dearly.  She and dad were servants of the Lord and faithful Christian examples to our family and their Church family.  Mom’s commitment to serving the Lord started as a young girl at home with her mother (one of six sisters).  The women of the Carroll family were devout Christians and had a significant influence on my mom and dad and countless others. Mom loved being with her family and friends to share a meal, play games, and fellowship including singing songs from the hymnal after eating.  She loved her sons and grandchildren and wanted nothing less for them than to be successful, happy, and to revere the Lord.  Mom and dad helped any family member in need over the years including caring for mom’s parents for thirteen years.  In chronological order, Mom and Dad were members at Church of Christ congregations in Seminole Oklahoma (Little Church of Christ); Ardmore, Oklahoma (Maxwell Avenue Church of Christ); Edmond Oklahoma (Edmond Church of Christ); Gretna, Louisiana (Gretna Church of Christ); and Edmond, Oklahoma (Edmond Church of Christ).  After returning to Edmond in 1978, Lula and George served as “Soldiers of the Cross” at the Midway and Waterloo Road Church of Christ for over thirty years.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband George Richmond, her son Jim Richmond, her parents, Clyde and Edith Roberts, and brother, Preston Roberts.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Christi Richmond of Edmond, Oklahoma; brother, Dave Roberts and wife Judy Roberts of Midwest City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kelly (Eric) Bledsoe, Ashlee (Paul) Thompson, Travis Richmond, Byron (Crystal) Richmond, Chad Richmond, Josh (Andrea) Webb, Ashley (Barret) Austin; great grandchildren, Cheyenne Steele, Mason Steele, Lane Richmond, Luke Richmond, Draden Thompson, Brooklyn Thompson, Brynnlee Thompson, Rob Manchester, Holden Manchester, River Webb, many nieces and nephews and many dear friends she cherished as family.

The family would like to thank Integris Hospice House, Grace Living Center, St. Anthony Hospital, Tealridge Assisted Living, Summit Medical Center and Krizzo Meadows (transportation) for their loving care of my mom over the past few years.

We give thanks to God for our opportunity to share in mom’s life and look forward to uniting with her again in heaven.  We have been truly blessed to know her.
