Lezeta Colene Guthrie
Lezeta left her earthly home on April 4, 2019, to be with her Heavenly Father, and with her earthly father, whom she longed for and loved so dearly. Lezeta was born in Lakeview, TX, on August 22, 1942, to the family of Elmer and Lucille Teel with one older brother, Royce. She loved growing up on a west Texas farm and was trained to be a night owl because of the nightly musical gatherings her parents hosted. “Zeta” also loved her school friends and has remained close to them throughout her life.
Her life was forever changed at the age of 17 when her dad died suddenly. She said one of the most beautiful things she had seen was for her father to leave the Bob Wills band and give up everything to become a Christian, and eventually an elder in the church. After completing high school she married Charles Guthrie in 1960. Shortly after she had two boys, Dwayne and Doug, and Charles’ work took them to new locations, including Perryton, Pecos, Haskell and finally College Station, TX where they settled for many years and raised children. More moves after retirement brought them to Huntsville, TX and Oklahoma City to be near family as Charles fought cancer.
Zeta worked as a hairstylist briefly and then many years as a home caregiver, and even owned her own childcare business called “Frills & Freckles” for a short time. Zeta always loved and had a way with children and the elderly, but never came to place that she considered herself in that category. She always kept a childlike, fun, and playful nature. She always had a plan for activity and enjoyed spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren, especially at Christmas.
Zeta was known for her sense of humor, outgoing personality, wonderful cooking and entertaining, and love of games and going to the movies. She and Charles spent lots of their time welcoming family and friends into their home, and loved to travel and fish. She loved country music, trips to the beach and on the ocean, shopping and Whataburger. As the years went by she focused on caring for Charles during his extended illness. Zeta was a member of the Deer Creek Church of Christ and she used her talents to cook for weekly gatherings and loved to visit the sick and provide a friendly welcome to others.
She will be missed and is survived by one son, Dwayne Guthrie and his wife Cindy of Oklahoma City, four grandchildren; Travis Guthrie and his wife Reagan, of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kristen Rivera and her husband Sergio of Mustang, Oklahoma, Caroline Guthrie, of Oklahoma City, and Ethan Guthrie of Conroe, Texas; eight great grandchildren, Lillyan, Hayden, Harper, Charlie, Josie, Hank, Gabriel and Mateo; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her son Doug, her parents, two step-fathers, and one brother.
A private graveside service will be held later in the year in Memphis, Texas.
Memorial donations can be made to Search and Rescue International, P. O. Box 563, Edmond, OK 73083-0563.
