Lavergne Lester

1922-2017

Mid-afternoon Sunday the 19^th of March, 2017 LaVergne Mittel Lester reached the end of her days. After a short intense battle with cancer she found her final rest surrounded by her three daughters Susan McReynolds, Linda Simonson and Debbie Slosky. As she passed from this life to the next a gospel song recorded by her son Timothy Lester, a minister in New Zealand, played softly in the background.

LaVergne was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Oklahoma shortly after she was married. She worked for the State of Oklahoma for over 30 years. LaVergne worked for the School Land Commission, The Oklahoma Supreme Court and as an Executive Administrative Assistant to the head of the Oklahoma State Department of Education until she retired in 1991. She was a long-time member of the Edmond Newcomers and an avid bridge player. The past several years she maintained a brisk schedule of 4-5 games a week. She didn’t always win but she always wanted to. LaVergne will be missed.

There were two great non-negotiables in her life, her love and commitment for her children and their families and her faithfulness in attending mass at St. John’s Catholic Church in Edmond. As her illness progressed, she started attending Mass on her IPad and she faithfully received communion from Jim and Nancy, Deacons from St. John’s who happened to be her next-door neighbors. The family is so grateful to them for their faithful ministry to LaVergne until the end.

LaVergne is survived by her four children Susan McReynolds and husband David, Linda Simonson and husband Tom, Debbie Slosky and husband George and Timothy Lester and wife Kitty, also her two beloved sisters and their husbands Patricia and George Riedle and Jeanne and Tom Christensen, 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by

her parents Alphonse and Theresa Mittel and two siblings Eleanor Witt and Thomas Mittel, all of whom she loved dearly.

“Mimi” will be missed intensely by all who knew and loved her.
