Walker, LarryLarry Paul Walker was born March 3, 1947 in Newton, IA to Rev. J. Wilfred and Jaunita Walker and died October 8, 2016 in Oklahoma City, OK. His family moved back to Oklahoma in 1950 and he attended public schools in Guthrie, Woodward, and Midwest City, OK. After attending college at Phillips University and the University of Oklahoma for three years, he attended Paul’s Beauty College in Oklahoma City. His professional career began in March 1969 at Coiffures by Katherine in Norman, OK. Next, he managed The Transition Shop (Campus Corner) from 1970 to 1977 until he opened and operated Impressions, a salon on Campus Corner in Norman.

Active with the National Cosmetology Association for many years, he was a popular guest artist/lecturer for over 300 seminars in thirty-nine states, coordinated twelve national conventions, served in various capacities in over forty national hairstyling competitions, was inducted into the NCA Hall of Renown, received the prestigious Charles Award for professional contributions and community involvement, served on the NCA Administrative Committee for several years, and was President of the Oklahoma Cosmetology Association.

Locally, Walker was an avid volunteer for the arts in Norman. He served on the Board of Directors for the Norman Ballet Company (15 years), Norman Arts Council (9+ years), the Norman Public Arts Board (2007 – Present), was a participant in the Norman Arts and Humanities Roundtable for over 20 years, and was a supporter of Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. In addition, he was responsible for the makeup and hairstyles for the OU Opera program productions from 1995 to 2012. Through the years he also assisted many organizations with their productions and fund raising projects. In 2010, Mr. Walker was honored with a Governor’s Arts Award for his contributions to the Norman arts community.

Preceding him in death were grandparents, parents, and sister, Wilita Walker/Larrison. He is survived by two nephews (James Larrison and wife Molly, and Steve Larrison), brother-in-law David Larrison, three great nieces, a great nephew, two aunts, and many wonderful friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Public Arts Board of the Norman Arts Council (www.normanarts.org).

A celebration of his life showcasing his involvement in the arts community will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on November 5, at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 East Main Street, Norman.
