Kay Sharon Cornsilk

Kay Sharon Standifer Cobb Cornsilk, 75, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at home in Edmond. Kay was born June 10, 1938 in Oklahoma City to Ray W. and Mildred Standifer. Kay graduated from Edmond High School and attended Central State College. On February 8, 1957 she married Ivan Dan Cobb of Edmond. On August 31, 1963 a tragic automobile accident left Kay widowed and paralyzed. Kay lived life to the fullest extent possible, even beyond her physical limitations, and was extremely generous with a very kind spirit. She served as PTA President at Orvis Risner Elementary School, a Pink Lady at Edmond Hospital, was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, and volunteered at EARC, among other things. She was also the first woman ever to receive the Sertoma Club of Capitol Hill’s annual “Service to Mankind Award.”
After the car accident in 1963, Kay attended Okmulgee Rehabilitation Center where she learned how to live independently. There she met the love of her life, another patient named Robert Cornsilk, a quadriplegic. They married February 28, 1978. During their marriage Kay and Robert became actively involved as volunteers with the Paralyzed Veterans of America. With Kay’s help Robert served stints as Director of the National organization and President of PVA’s Mid-America Chapter. They also formed a Green Country Division of PVA in Muskogee and were active volunteers at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital there. She is survived by brother Ray W. Standifer, Jr. and wife Joan of Oklahoma City, daughters Sheri and husband Mike Byer and Michelle and husband Michael Stacy of Edmond, grandchildren Melissa and John Burright, Amanda and Sage Halbert, Ben and Lezlie Stacy, Cale Stacy and Peyton Stacy, great granddaughters Remington Burright and Hadley Halbert, and a host of precious family and friends. Anyone who knew Kay would describe her attitude, the way she carried herself, and the way she lived her earthly life, as nothing short of inspirational. Heaven gained a genuine angel when she arrived. Kay was a member of Waterloo Road Baptist Church in Edmond. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Waterloo Road Baptist Church in Edmond, Oklahoma. Pastor Griff Henderson and Chaplain Nancy Bridges will officiate. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Edmond. In lieu of flowers, Kay has asked that donations be made to Edmond Mobile Meals, MidAmerica PVA or Good Shepherd Hospice. A casual visitation will be held Friday, July 19, 2013 at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond from 6-8 pm.
