Harlene ‘Kay’ Sexton Cougill-Miller
January 28th, 1933 – April 28th, 2024
Yes! She was proud of all of her names, but the two she loved the most were ‘Mom’ and ‘Grammy’. She was a tiny woman, but had a larger than life personality. She would walk into a room and be instantly in command with her dazzling smile. Everyone around her would lovingly become part of her universe.
Born to parents Harley and Ruby Sexton, she and her brother Robert ‘Bob’ grew up in Anderson, Indiana. She attended Ball State University, earning her Master’s Degree in Childhood Education. She was a lifetime member of the sorority Alpha Sigma Tau. Kay married David Connor Cougill in 1955, and welcomed four children: Conya Cae (Allan), Cristie Rae (Toby), Caren Renae (Eric), and Craig Connor (Terri). Along with her children, Kay leaves behind nine grandchildren affectionately known as the Grammy 9, six great grandchildren (with a 7th on the way), and two bonus great grandsons.
Kay is preceded in death by her parents, her youngest daughter Caren, her first husband (our dad) Dave, her second husband Robert ‘Bob’ Miller, and many other relatives and friends gone before her. Her enthusiasm, dancing, and laughter will be extraordinarily missed. Can you hear Mom and Caren singing in Heaven with Elvis?

My beautiful Grammy! I am so grateful I had 37 years with you. So many memories to hold on to—from Richard Simmons workouts and Elvis concerts, to Mother’s Day lunches, horses, January birthdays, beer tastings, lake trips, & St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans. Your legacy will live on through your kids, the Grammy 9, and the Great Grammy soon to be 9! Say hi to Aunt Caren for me. I love you.
