John L. Butler
November 23, 1938 – September 30, 2017
John L. Butler, 78 of Edmond, Okla. Was born November 23, 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to John W. and Rose Marie Butler. John was a Heavy Equipment Operator. John enjoyed steer wrestling until his age prevented doing that. He really enjoyed watching his grandkids and great grandkids play sports and rodeoing.
He passed away September 30, 2017 at his home. Survivors include, Daughter and son in law Shellie and John Coughran, Son Kurt Butler, grandchildren, Tara Simmons and husband Rusty, Baylor Butler and great grandchildren, Grady and Shanlee Simmons, and sister Patsy. John is preceded in death by his parents and wife Lawana.
Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday October 5, 2017 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Shelle and Kurt: Sincerest condolences for you and your families. He will be missed. How weird is it that dad dies just a year ago? I know how you all are feeling and even though we have not seen each other for a lot of years, please feel free to let me know if you need anything, even if it’s a shoulder or an ear.

I first met your dad in Bill Weaver’s practice pen at Noble, OK. back in 1970. I was fixing to be a senior in high school and him and Bill worked on me in the practice pen pretty good. He was always ready to coach anybody who was trying to learn bulldogging, and he even judged a high school rodeo I was entered in once. Lost track of him til I joined the SPRA in 1994. Was a pleasant surprise and on SPRA weekends, we’d always go out to eat and hang out with him, your mom, Mark and Pat LaRue, John and Carolyn Hicks and Phil and Terry Sanders. Was a good time and he’ll be sorely missed. Me and Mary are sorry for y’alls loss.
Sorry to hear of the passing of John! So, glad I got to visit with him at Marty Musil’s Bulldogging Jackpot in the Spring. He was a really good friend and could always tell a good story. He will be truly missed by all, that had the pleasure of knowing him. Sending my Sincere Condolences.
Thank you guys my dad loved bulldogging doing it and watching it especially when Baylor started I no that just tickled him an made him proud he loved everyone of his friends he enjoyed telling storys which I no everyone knew that.He

Ya have ta be proud we have parents like we have , seen Mr. Butler at a bulldogin couple yrs back , just the way i remembered him when i was a kid , good man !
