Joan Hast

1932 – 2020

Laura Joan Tubbs Hast was born in Oklahoma City January 19, 1932 to Bertrand Monroe Tubbs and Clara Adelaide Mixer. After a short illness she went home to be with her Lord Jesus on January 9, 2020, eight days before her 88^th birthday. Joan married William Charles (Bill) Hast on January 25, 1950 in a small private ceremony after Wednesday night worship at Bodine Baptist Church in Oklahoma City where he served as pastor. They established a home at 7105 S. Walker in Oklahoma City, where they lived for the next thirteen years as they grew their family. In January of 1951 Joan gave birth to their first child, William Charles, II (Chuck). Nearly four years later John Timothy (Tim) was born in December of 1953, and the family was completed with the birth of Laurie Jill in August of 1958. In 1963 Joan and Bill followed a call to missions and moved the family to Puerto Rico where they lived for the next 33 years planting churches and ministering to the people whose paths they crossed, both within and outside their church family. When they returned to Oklahoma in 1996, she continued her service as Bill’s ministry partner until his illness and death in 2013. During and throughout their time in Puerto Rico, she raised three children and maintained the home, where she busied herself with cooking, gardening, caring for a steady stream of beloved pets, and participating in various social groups and classes, activities that continued when they moved into their home in Edmond. Joan was a person of apparently boundless energy, even up to her final illness. After Bill’s death, and at an age when many others would see it as a time to “take it easy,” Joan went to work at various part-time jobs to have something to do, and to supplement her income. She added volunteer work in order to stay busy, saying she couldn’t bear inactivity. Most of all, she loved people and relationships, and informally “adopted” innumerable individuals whom she loved and thought of as her own family members.

Joan was preceded in death by Bill, her husband of 63 years, her parents, one half brother, four brothers and two sisters, parents-in-law William Bert Hast and Mattie Dill Hast, and Bill’s brother and three sisters, whom she considered her own. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, William Charles Hast, II and his wife Iliana; John Timothy Hast and his wife Ruthie; and one daughter and son-in-law, Laurie Jill Hast and her husband Charles Mooney. She also leaves behind four grandchildren and their mates, and one great grandson; Timothy Michael Hast and his wife Jenni; Christopher Daniel Hast and his wife Joy; Hannah Abigail Mooney; and Jonathan David Mooney, all of Edmond, and Michael Isaac Hast of Yukon. In addition, she leaves a host of adoring nieces, nephews, and friends who have all been blessed by her love and friendship.

Services of worship and celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 3:00 Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Edmond Road Baptist Church, 1207 West Edmond Road, Edmond, Oklahoma.
