Jay Alan Babcock

Jay Alan Babcock, 90, of Edmond was born December 7, 1926 in Salem, Oregon, to William Boothroy Babcock and Loritte Mae Medsker. He passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016 in Edmond. The oldest of 14 children, after his parents divorced and both parents had remarried he left at the age of 12. A self-made, self-educated man, Jay traveled several states in a search of his father. He left Butte, MT, where his father had worked in the mines and spent one summer in a forestry tower, watching for smoke in the forest. His food was brought out to him each week. Jay lived in a tent with another young man while they were logging trees for wood that sold for $8 a cord.

Jay arrived in Tooele, UT in 1943 where he found his father who was living in Ophir, Ut and working as a guard for Deseret Chemical. Jay went to work for the Deseret Chemical Fire Department. They both went to work in the Ophir mines later.

Jay married Frances Treloar September 29, 1957 in Ely, Nevada. He became a second father to her two daughters. Jay worked in the mines in Tooele, Ophir, Twenty-nine Palms, California, Colorado, Missoula, Mt. and worked for the City of Tooele, and MacFarlane & Hullinger in Tooele. Frances passed away March 11, 1987. He married Virginia Linn April 18, 1998 in Luther, Oklahoma. They moved to Chandler, Ok and were later divorced.

Jay is survived by his step-daughters, Pat (Wade, deceased) Smalling and Jeanne (LaMar) Jones; brothers, Danny Babcock, Fred Babcock, Roy Babcock, Joe Crowder, Orvin Crowder; sisters, Linda Crowder, Idona Crowder, Gracie Babcock, Joyce Babcock, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, three brothers, and one sister.

As per his request there will be no services. Cremation under the direction of Matthews Funeral home in Edmond.
