James “Jim” Merril Gass

James Merril Gass passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on June 13, 2024.

Jim was born in Garden City, Kansas October 30, 1941.  Growing up, Jim had many moves during his childhood with his mother and the father that raised him, Kenneth Jenkins, an Army Air Corp recruiter during WWII and after. Jim spent his high school years in Stillwell, Oklahoma. Jim put himself through college through hard work. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Personnel Management from Oklahoma State University and later, a Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University.

Jim met Joan Goodbary, the love of his life, in Stillwater Oklahoma at OSU in 1963. They dated in for 18 months and were married in Stillwater in 1964, surrounded by family and friends.  This is where life began for these 2 adventurous kids.

He truly never turned away from any project or challenge. His loyalty and devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, an OSU Cowboy and friend, are truly what made Jim happy in this life. To Joan and Family.

So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I never served directly with Jim, however, I was aware of his military service as we served at Fort Sill during similar time frames. As a former career field artillery officer I can attest that he was one of the best and made major contributions to the Aviation and Artillery branches in the United States Army. May he rest in peace.
