William “Bill” C. Hurst
1928 – 2021
William “Bill” Carl Hurst, of Edmond, passed away the morning of December 10, 2021. Bill was born January 12, 1928, to Lewis C. Hurst and Eva Maggie (Shoeppel) Hurst in Clearwater, Kansas. He grew up in Wichita, Kansas, attended North High School, and graduated from Friends University. He married JoAnn Herndon on October 26, 1952, remaining in Wichita for many years to raise their three sons.
Bill worked with insurance for several years but spent the largest portion of his career with Tandy Leather. He managed stores in Missouri, Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, retiring in 1995. This job was a good fit for his personality because he loved working with people and enjoyed creating things from leather.
Bill and JoAnn shared a love for their church family and were long-time members at Memorial Road Church of Christ. They both enjoyed music and shared this gift with all their sons. Serving several years as a deacon, Bill was a tireless volunteer for benevolence and participated in a small singing group. As a result of his commitment and friendly personality, Bill made many dear friends and always welcomed them with a smile.
Bill had many hobbies throughout his life and in retirement. He and JoAnn enjoyed traveling with their dog to a variety of places in their fifth wheel camper. He was known for growing tomatoes and eagerly shared them with all his friends. Bill was a patient fisherman, an avid collector of coins and knives, and valued any time with his family.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis C. and Eva M Hurst, and his sisters, Lena Marie Nelson and Mabel Dildine. Bill is survived by JoAnn, his wife of 69 years; his three sons; Don Hurst and wife Naomi, of Garland, Texas, Gary Hurst and wife Sylvia, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and David Hurst and wife Nancy, of Ninnekah, Oklahoma; he is also survived by 7 grandsons and 16 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Tealridge Assisted Living, Traditions Hospice, and his many friends for their kind gestures and compassionate support.
A celebration of Bill Hurst’s life will be on Friday, December 17, 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Road Church of Christ. (2221 E Memorial Rd, Edmond, OK 73013)
