1936 – 2022
Robert Donald (“Don”) Hurst passed away after a long illness on September 28, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. Don was born in Dallas Texas on July 11, 1936, to Louis and Ethel Hurst. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a B.B.A. in business. Don built a long career in Dallas working in the commercial insurance industry. The highlight of his career was spent at the Mullis Newby Hurst Agency where he developed deep friendships. He retired at 75 years old when he moved to Edmond, Oklahoma to be near family.
Don married “his love” Gayle Marye in 1958, thus beginning their 64-year journey together full of love, faith, & family. Don & Gayle have three children, Mike, Cindy and Steve. Through the years, Don & Gayle were active members in the Lake Highlands community.
For Don, family was first, always. Family wasn’t just his wife, children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren – but also his extended family, especially his brother Louis. To Don, his church community, co-workers, friends, neighbors & caregivers…everyone became family.
Don lived out his faith as an active member and elder at Highlands Christian Church in Dallas & Southern Hills Christian Church in Edmond. Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior as he demonstrated throughout his days and prayers.
Don enjoyed the outdoors throughout his life. He shared many good times hunting & fishing with his dad, brother, family & friends. He always loved sports…coaching his sons and as a fan.
Some of the best times for Don were spent at Galveston or Lake Hiawassee enjoying his children, grandchildren & extended family. In retirement, he and Gayle enjoyed traveling together and with friends.
Until his last days, when asking Don how he was, he would always respond with love: ”Better now that you’re here.”
Don is survived by his wife Gayle Hurst, his children Mike and Kelley Hurst, Cindy and Mo Gessouroun, Steve Hurst and Lindsay Clark, Kelli Hurst and his eight grandchildren & four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Louis Hurst, wife Doris Hurst & family.
Don had a rich and wonderful life which had a lasting impact on all he met and the lives he touched. He will be greatly missed but remembered always with love and respect.
Services will be held Thursday, October 6 at 1:30PM at Southern Hills Christian Church, 3207 South Boulevard, Edmond, Oklahoma 73013.
