LaVerne Southerland

1928 – 2022

LaVerne Southerland, 94, of Edmond, OK died September 30, 2022. Laverne was the daughter of Oscar and Kate Mullins born in 1928 in Nash, TX. Sometime after finishing her schooling in Waxahachie, TX, she moved to Oklahoma City to live near her sisters. She met George Southerland on a blind date to a wedding. They were married in 1952 and raised four children in Edmond.

LaVerne will be remembered most by her encouraging nature. She was friendly with everyone, often inviting a new friend (such as the grocery checker) to holiday meals. She loved to read and was forever seeking to learn. She was always ready to play any game and her grandchildren remember the silly pranks she’d pull, or teach them to do. Most of all LaVerne lived her life as a Christian with such a sweet spirit.

LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, her brothers James, Ike and Dean Mullins, her sisters Francis Shinpaugh and Falah Benton Carter and their spouses, also three nephews and a niece. She is survived by her children and their spouses Rick and Gayle Southerland, Janet and Dave Egelston, Chris Southerland and Stacey and Mike Shields. Her grandchildren and spouses Kristi and Joel Schmidt, Amber and Anthony Martinez, Eric Egelston, Sarah and Travis Hale, Kevin Egelston and Neil Shields. Four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom she loved so, so dearly.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2022 from 2-4 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home with family present to greet friends.

A public memorial is pending in 2023.
