Dwight L. Maker

Dwight LaVerne Maker, 72, a lifetime resident of Edmond, OK died in his home surrounded by family at 1:00 in the afternoon on Friday, October 21, 2022 after a 5-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 53 years, Brenda (Oxford) Maker, daughter Toni and Justin Spence of Edmond, son Nathan and Kim Maker of Edmond and son Jaime Maker of Guthrie, grandchildren: Jonathan and Krista Spence of Wellston, Abby Maker of Guthrie Jamison Spence of Edmond and Wyatt Maker of Guthrie, 2 great-grandchildren: Jackson Spence and Brynlee Spence of Wellston.

Additionally, Dwight is survived by his 2 brothers: Leonard and Julina Maker of Edmond and Larry and Carolyn Maker of Sterling, CO. Dwight is preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Ruth Maker of Edmond.

Dwight was born November 8, 1949 in Edmond, OK and was a graduate of Edmond Memorial High School. He married his childhood sweetheart, Brenda Oxford in 1969. He became a firefighter in the city of Edmond in 1972, ascending to the rank of Fire Chief in 1993. Dwight was one of the founding members of the Edmond Firefighters Association. He was a member of the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association and a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators. Dwight was a member of the International Fire Chiefs Association and a past president of the Oklahoma Fire Chiefs Association.

Dwight was a life-long member of the Waterloo Church of the Nazarene. His family often stated that if the doors were open, not only was Dwight there, he probably unlocked the doors. He taught Sunday school, small group classes and was a member of many boards and committees throughout the years. Dwight was instrumental in REACH ministries (food pantry and clothes closet); often hand-delivering food for needy families during the pandemic.

After his retirement from the Edmond Fire Department, Dwight spent nearly 20 years as a member of the board of directors for the Oak Cliff Fire Department, the last few as Chairman. He also continued custom homebuilding after his retirement.

Dwight Maker never met a stranger. Even through all of the hard times of this past year, he never lost his sense of humor.

Formal visitation for Dwight will be held at Matthews Funeral Home on Thursday, October 27 with family present to greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 11:00 AM at Waterloo Church of the Nazarene, 457 W Waterloo Rd; interment will be at Waterloo Cemetery in Edmond.
