Bill Dwayne Voss
October 3, 1948 – January 2, 2023
Bill was born October 3, 1948, in Edmond, OK to Doyl and Wanda Voss. He died January 2, 2023, from stage 4 lung cancer. He proudly served in the Army with the 101st Airborne Troop C 2nd/17th Cavalry in the Vietnam War zone. Less than four months after arriving in Vietnam, he became a platoon sergeant in his unit. Late one night, his unit was called to reinforce an ambushed Ranger Patrol. As Sergeant Voss prepared the wounded for evacuation and positioned his men into a defensive perimeter, his own unit came under heavy fire. Badly wounded and subjecting himself to hostile fire, he single-handedly rescued the evacuees while moving from position to position, directing fire on enemy locations. His actions repelled the enemy attack and earned him a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Army commendation Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
After retiring from the Army, Bill worked at the Post Office, as a Heavy Equipment Operator, and doing long haul trucking.
He loved baseball his whole life. Many friends attending Oklahoma RedHawks and OKC Dodgers games would visit with him in his favorite seats. Football was also an interest. He spent Sunday afternoons watching NFL football with his Dad, and other family members.
He is preceded in death by his father, Doyl W. Voss; mother, Wanda I. Voss; and sister, Kathryn S. Cotton.
He is survived by his daughter, Kayla R. Voss. His grandchildren are Ajaysa Voss and Alyssa Katz. Niece, Bobbi S. Cotton and Nephew, Lester M Cotton. Uncles Fred Neighbors with wife Maria Neighbors, and Paul Neighbors with wife Elaine Neighbors. Plus cousins and other family.
He will be missed by many friends in his home town of Edmond and across the U.S.
