1937-2017

Harold Westermier passed away peacefully on August 21st, 2017, at the age of 79. He was a resident of Arcadia, Oklahoma. Harold was born on December 6th, 1937, to E.P. Westermier and Emma Ludeman Westermier in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. As a child, he grew up on the Westermier family farm surrounded by the Great Depression. This is where his values of hard work and family relationships, began. Harold never cared too much about money, valuing relationships and helping people over wealth. Despite the childhood hardships, he was named Captain of the Moore High School basketball team and was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended college at Central State University and Oklahoma University. He joined the 45th Army National Guard where he achieved the rank of “Battalion Supply Sergeant.” His career began working in finance as a loan officer for a short time before finding his true calling in the construction industry. In the early 1960’s, Harold started his own excavation and construction company operating heavy equipment and positioned gigantic mountains of earth as fellow man sometimes planned. Harold never really retired from doing what he loved. He loved what he did so much that he used his free time to teach his grandchildren and great grandchildren how to operate loaders, dozers, excavators, and other equipment at a very young age. Harold cut several paths through the woods on his land and loved driving his family on the “gator” down those paths to the pond, having campfires and creating family gatherings. He even managed to get the entire family together for a Halloween extravaganza at the final resting place of a petrified dragon. Family was the most important thing to Harold, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His Easter egg hunts could be very challenging, as they were far from traditional. Instead, they were well-planned scavenger hunts. Harold would spend days putting tricky little clues in each egg for every grandchild and each clue would lead them to the next egg. He had more fun watching the kids wander aimlessly around the yard than he let on. The clues were complex, involving math, science, geography, and other life skills. His wisdom, compassion and gentle spirit was loved by many and will be greatly missed by friends and family. Harold married Cynthia Westermier on February 5th, 1960. They were married 57 years. They had two sons, Edward Westermier and his wife Jo of Luther, Oklahoma, and Greg Westermier and his wife Tammy of Luther, Oklahoma. He had a beloved sister, Doris Richeson of Graham, Texas. Harold had six grandchildren, AJ Westermier, Amanda Westermier, Kent Westermier, Cody Westermier, Tierney Westermier, and Tyler Westermier. He had two great grandchildren, Case Westermier and Ryien Westermier. He is preceded in death by his parents, E.P. Westermier and Emma Ludeman Westermier, granddaughter Amanda Westermier, and his cat, Rivet. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Services will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel, with interment at Wellston Cemetery, Wellston, OK.

  1. Greg, I am so sorry to see this. I can only think that you probably just lost your best friend and mentor. I will say that having only met you once for just a weekend of training that I am sure your Dad was very proud of you and that followed in his footsteps for sure. Staying in touch with you for past 10-11 years after only a weekend Baltimore at the Expo has been a blessing. Following your endeavors on Facebook and how you bond with all kids and your passion for your work made it seem like I was reading about you. Thankfully I wasn’t. I know your pain, I lost my Dad 21 years ago but I talk to him everyday as I am sure you will do. Just know that he is with Amanda now and they are looking after you and yours. Looks to me like your Dad won the race because he raised an awesome son. Carry on my Brother , that’s he raised to do. I Love you man and though I am far away in Carolina I am only a call away, whatever you need. Godspeed to you and your family in this trying time. God Bless

  2. Harold was one of the finest men I have ever known. He gave my Cousin Cynthia a lot of love. He also took great care of his family. He was a man of few words but he was very compassionate about everything he did and you can bet he would do it right. I know that he is with Jesus now and pain free.
