Graham Bennett

Bennett, Graham, folder 3Graham Bennett was born in McClain County near Washington, OK on August 23, 1921, he passed away peacefully in his sleep Sept. 19, 2015.

He had lived in the Noble, OK area and graduated from Noble High School in 1942 and joined the US Army shortly after graduating . He served in India and Burma in WWII. Graham made many friends while in the army and still kept in touch with a few of them. After an Honorable Discharge in 1945, he came back to Oklahoma and became a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

After being home a short time he started to work at the Leader Press Printing Company in OKC as a Printer. In 1945 he met his wife Wenona Barnard in Norman, OK. They married in 1948 and moved to Edmond, OK in 1949. He worked for the Leader Press for 25 years in OKC, then went to work at Central State University, now known as UCO, at their print shop and retired from there in 1986 after 14 years.

Graham and his wife, Wenona, enjoyed all kinds of sports, along with square dancing for many years, bowling, playing cards, going to Bingo and he especially enjoyed golfing with his buddies. Graham and Wenona lived in the same house on 13th street for over 50 years with the same close neighborhood friends who he enjoyed sitting with on their front porches drinking coffee each morning.

Graham is the grandson of Isaac Graham who made the Land Run of 1889; he staked a homestead claim near Noble, OK and owned a hardware store in Noble for 40 years.

Graham is survived by his wife of 66 ½ years, Wenona, their three children, daughter Carol and husband Paul Lindsay, son Dennis Bennett, and daughter Gail and husband Jay Black, seven grandchildren, Rachel Bennett, Danielle and husband David Bishop, Sarah Hall, Michelle and husband Richard Bercher, Kevin and wife Ryann Bennett, Lynsi and husband Ryan Rhodes, Taylor Black, and five great grandchildren, Drew Bishop, Andi Hall, Dyson Hall, Derek Bishop, Max Rhodes, plus one still on the way. Also, Graham’s two brothers L.H. and wife Mary, from broken Bow, OK, and Ralph and wife Arlena from Noble, OK.

Graham was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Effie Bennett, one sister Edna Montgomery and one brother Bob Bennett.

 

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel with Interment to follow at Gracelawn Cemetery, Edmond, OK.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about Graham’s passing–he was truly an officer and a gentleman!! I’ll never forget the time he went with me to buy a new car; his advice was so helpful and wonderful. He wanted to make sure that they treated me right and fair especially since I was a single woman. He and Weonna always made you feel like a member of the family when you drop in for a visit. He will be missed but never forgotten!

  2. I worked with Graham In the CSU print shop part time as a student in 1975-76. He was fun to talk to and to know. I’m glad to see he lived a very full life!
