Jones, Gladys obit cropGladys J. Jones, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home on December 14, 2013. Gladys was born to May Rinehart Dabbs and Ralph Dabbs on November 11, 1921 in Guthrie, OK. She was raised in Meridian, OK, where she met her husband William O. Jones, Sr. They resided in Guthrie, OK until 1969 at which time they moved to Edmond, OK. They had three children – William (Bill), Wayne and Alice.

Gladys worked for the City of Guthrie from 1966 until she retired in 1983. At that time, she began her second career by starting an in home daycare. She became “Grandma” to many children, as well as their families. She loved all of the children that she watched, but in later years she forged a great bond with several Nigerian families and their children.

Gladys was also known by many to be an excellent cook. She loved to cook and everyone loved her cooking! Many of the children were known to want to go to “Grandma’s” to eat, which made her extremely proud.

She and her husband were great fans of bluegrass music and spent much of their time traveling to bluegrass festivals. She had a passion for bluegrass and gospel music. She also loved to watch basketball, football, and baseball on TV.

Her husband, William O. Jones, Sr.; her parents, May and Ralph Dabbs; and her brother, Ralph Dabbs, Jr, preceded Gladys in death. She is survived by her son William (Bill) Jones, Jr. & wife Beverly of Harrah, OK; her son Wayne Jones of Edmond, OK; and her daughter Alice Hayes & husband Curtis of Oklahoma City, OK. Also, she is survived by her grandchildren Randi Tennant (Paul) of Harrah, OK; Brandi English of Harrah, OK; Craig Jones (Kristi) of Edmond, OK; Chad Jones (Jeanette) of Edmond, OK; Katherine Jones (Nick) of Chandler, OK; and Taylor Hayes of Oklahoma City, OK, nine great grand-children and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Excell Hospice and Visiting Angels of Edmond. She looked forward to each and every one of their visits.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK. A private interment will be held at a later date at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, OK.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Infant Crisis Services, Oklahoma City, OK.

    Many special people come into our lives and then leave as angels-your mother and grandmother was a very, very special person who will not be forgotten by us, our children and granddaughter-she was a blessing to us. We are very sorry for your loss but God has another mission and place for her-you and your family are in our prayers
