George Alan Gilbert

George Alan Gilbert

1927 – 2023

Born February 9, 1927, went home to the arms of his savior May 24, 2023.

George was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma to LD and Garnett Gilbert. He was the middle son of three with his older brother Lawrence and younger brother Jack (both deceased). Graduating from high school in 1944, he enlisted in the Army where he underwent Ranger training. George proudly served in WWII in Japan where he was the liaison for General Douglas McArthur in occupied Japan.

Returning to the states he attended Tulsa University, where in 1950, he was recalled to the Army and served in the Korean war training the draftees and reservists in Light and Heavy Machine Guns.

Upon return, he moved to Tulsa and started his career in the Oil and Gas industry while attending night school to finish his degree. George retired from Cities Service Oil Company after 37 years and joined the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department where he was a reservist for 22 years.

In 1952 he married Rosemary Tripp with whom he raised 3 children. Rosemary went home in 1988. He then met and married Evelyn Devine (Louise) whom he spent 20 years with traveling the world and having great adventures. Louise went home in 2008. He married his college girlfriend Betty Dunn in 2013. Betty went home in 2018.

George is survived by his three children, Tala Sue Gilbert of Oklahoma City, Doc Lee Gilbert and wife Sylvia of Oklahoma City, and Jan Marie Roberts and husband Brad of Broken Arrow.

He will always be remembered for his Love of Jesus Christ, his generosity, his love of playing games. A friend of his laughed at me on Monday morning, the day before he went home because I called him “Daddy”  I very seriously let him know that Dad is my Daddy, my Father is in heaven. The world was a better place with George in it, but I know in my heart he is at peace and wrapped in the love of our lord and savior.

Public visitation will be held Saturday, May 27th, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home.

A Graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Bethany Cemetery in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Prayers for George’s family. He lived down the hall from me at Epworth and was a very kind man. Rest is peace.
