Garry Dale Melvin
1959-2017
Garry Dale Melvin, 57, of Guthrie, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 26, 2017.
Garry leaves his wife of 32 years, Lil Melvin; his children Thomas and Leslee Rahbar, Brandon and Misti Rahbar, Farah and Charles Walker, Travis Melvin, and Michael Melvin; his grandchildren Lily, Aiden, Xavier, Savannah, Atticus, Ashtyn, Meadow, Gabriel, and Aubrey; his mother Norma Melvin; the woman that planted the seed of God in Garry; his brothers Kenny, Ivan, Mark, Timmy; and his sisters Sharon Montgomery, Carla Melvin and Carol Velasquez.
Garry was preceded in death by his father Carl Melvin; his sons Garry Wayne and Dustin; his brothers Larry, Sid, Bob, and Jimmy; his mother-in-law Billie Drummondo; and his brother-in-law Charly Brians.
Garry was born on October 23, 1959. Growing up and to this day Garry had siblings that have always been there for each other, yet those relationships were never lacking ornery playfulness.
That playfulness never went away. An incredibly funny goofball, Garry loved making people laugh and was always quick with a hilarious quip, joke or comeback.
On July 19, 1985, Garry married the love of his life. He and Lil had a long, successful, happy marriage and raised five kind and loving kids. Good heartedness was a trait they all shared with their dad.
Whether it was house repair, fixing cars, or building fences, Garry was known as the hardest worker in the family. That legendary work ethic was proven once again when he studied hard and passed his GED exam as an adult. A skilled painter, he ran his own painting business for many years before he retired.
Some of Garry’s favorite things to do included fishing, watching Western movies and playing Farkle, but more than anything, he enjoyed being with his family. No matter the time day or night, he was always there to help his kids with everything from manual labor to babysitting.
He especially loved spending time with his grandkids. Loving, fun, supportive and always happy to play, “Papa” was every grandchild’s favorite person in the world.
Garry and Lil together established and ran the Hands of Jesus food pantry in Guthrie. To this day, the organization feeds hundreds of families every week. In lieu of flowers, Garry would be pleased that donations to be made to the Hands of Jesus.
A devoted man of faith, Garry’s favorite scripture is Isaiah 40:31, which says, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Garry is soaring with God now, and he would like you to find the Lord so he can see you again.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 28, from 12pm-5pm at Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond. A celebration of Garry’s wonderful, joyous life and spirit will be held at Revival For Christ Church in Moore, Oklahoma, on Saturday, June 10, at 3pm.
Garry touched so many lives. His love of life and family was always evident and reached beyond his immediate family to those of us on the edges of that circle. It has been an honor and a privilege to know Garry over the years. His passing will leave an empty spot in our hearts and lives, but we know where we will find him again. In the meantime, our prayers, love and support are with each of you.
Thank you, love you
