Floyd L. Coppedge

Floyd L. Coppedge

1935 – 2015

dad5On Sunday, September 27, at 6:10 p.m., Dr. Floyd L. Coppedge was united with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and with his wife LaNell who preceded him in death by only 5 weeks, as well as many other loved ones who have gone on before.  At the time of his passing from this life to his eternal reward, he was surrounded by his family and embraced in love and honor as the patriarch of our family.

He will be remembered for a distinguished career devoted to excellence in teaching and learning. He was loved by many as the principal of Douglas High School, as chair and professor of education at Oklahoma Christian, and as Oklahoma’s Secretary of Education under Governor Frank Keating. While he had many considerable and exceptional accomplishments, he will most significantly be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grand-father and great-grandfather.  He will continue to be cherished as a mentor, leader, tutor, and role model.  He will always be respected for his dedication to our Heavenly Father and his unwavering relationship with Christ.  Many have admired him for his dignity, his eloquence, and his generosity.

All who met him, will miss him.

For to have met Floyd, was to know Floyd.  It  only took moments for people to see him for his honest self and in that same moment, to find themselves drawn to his kindness.  He was a man whose true inner character exuded from his every step and every word.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday October 3, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Wilshire Church of Christ in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Interment will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Kansas Cemetery in Kansas, OK.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. Floyd was a special person who made everybody feel valued because he valued everyone greatly. I know this year has been tough on your family, we will continue to pray for you in the weeks and months to come!

  2. Dr. Donald Rominger, Jr.

I was a colleague (and neighbor) of Dr. Coppedge at USAO for three years and maintained contact with him and occasionally sought his advice following that time. Floyd was a man of integrity and deep conviction and stood for the right things, no matter how inconvenient. He was always supportive of me personally and I am eternally grateful for his friendship.

I want to express my sympathy to Floyd’s family and know that he will be missed.

Floyd always had a smile and words of encouragement. He helped our daughter Teri to get into OU Masters program. Now she is a professor @ UC Channel Island and @ Pepperdine university.
Lloyd also had the privileged of serving with him as an elder at Wilshire.

  4. I am sorry for the Earthy loss and confident in the Heavenly gains he made in his earthly lifetime. It is tough to lose both parents so close; yet when they shared such devotion to each other, God, and family, it is an odd blessing for them, I suppose.

I was a junior in high school at Salina High South in 1971 when he came to lead the new adventure in education.

The obituary brought his memory to life. Although I never met his family, he was a solid, calm leader that did the right things and that really is a sign of a Christ-lead man.

That model still inspires and leads me in my wholistic community health paradigm. Dr Coppedge inspired students and teachers to do their best.

Because I also serve Jesus Christ, I look forward to having “edu-play-cations” with like-hearted servant leaders when we might again…

I remember Floyd for his commitment to children and the quality of their education. As Secretary of Education, he took the time to visit our school and marveled at the skills that the kindergarteners exhibited.
He was, indeed, a thoughtful man.
    My sincere sympathy,
