Ferne Louise Herman

1935-2024

Ferne Louise (Mattson) Herman died August 12, 2024. She was born February 5, 1935 in Wadena, MN to Verdi Mattson and Eleanor (Seidenkranz) Mattson. She was the oldest of three children; Ferne, sister Vonna and brother Warren. Ferne graduated from Staples High School, then went on to teacher training to end up as a rural school teacher for a few years, marrying Charles Herman for the next 72+ years. They first moved to St. Cloud, MN to live in a two bedroom Quonset building in the field zone for $25 a month. During this time, she worked at Federal Cartridge, a bullet factory as she called it. After this they moved to St. Cloud where she worked as a medical documentation specialist at St. Cloud Hospital. During summer sessions Ferne and Charlie hitchhiked nearly every weekend to Staples since they didn’t own a car. When the fall session began Ferne again taught in rural schools. With three young children they moved to Minneapolis where she worked at a hospital in St. Cloud while building their new home in St. Anthony Village. And finally, a fourth child was born and it was a girl! In 1973 they moved to Oklahoma City, 1981 moved to Kansas City, KS and in 1991 back to Edmond, OK where Ferne and Charlie worked in real estate together until retirement. Edmond also brought them to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where Ferne worked many years making a total of 467 baptismal banners before retiring. She considered this job an assignment from God’s place. Ferne was a superb seamstress and created many beautiful items of clothing for her grandchildren as well as dozens of beautiful quilts which she gifted to family members. Ferne was preceded in death by her parents, adoptive father Fred Barrett and her siblings. She is survived by her husband, Charlie and children Jeff Herman, Minneapolis, MN; Brad and his wife Rhonda, Larue, TX; Keith and his wife Elizabeth, Lewisville, TX; Deborah and her husband Keith Pradarits, Kennesaw, GA; and grandchildren James Herman and his wife Loni; Joey Pradarits and his wife Maria; Lynne Herman; Jeremy Pradarits and his wife Amanda; Jessica Pradarits and Scott Mohrman; and Jared Pradarits; many beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

If not for you and Charles, there would have nor been any adult model for me to grow up to know about how to care and love. You cared and treated me as one of yours and I always told everyone one you were my mom and dad and loved you as such. I just wish I could have expressed it better to you and Charles. You would be surprised at what I have become and am.
