Evelyn Garton

Evelyn Ruth Garton

April 4, 1941 – April 3, 2024

Evelyn Ruth Garton went to “stroll all over heaven” with Rex on April 3, 2024. She was born on April 4, 1941 in Harrah, OK in the house, Leon and Inez Roberson built. The house is still (barely) standing today. She lived in Harrah until marrying, Rex Garton, the love of her life, on January 23rd, 1960. She was 19 years old and he was 24.

One Sunday in the Summer of 1954 in Harrah, Evelyn at age 13 met Rex by no coincidence at all. While waiting to cross the street, she noticed the lady and her husband that she worked for at the dime store in the car that was passing by; she began to wave at Evelyn. Evelyn waved back. A handsome boy that was in the car with them began waving at her; he thought she was waving at him! When Rex found out she worked for the lady at the dime store he announced, “I don’t know who that girl is, but I am going to marry her”. Rex would come to the dime store every Saturday “like clockwork” and sit in the variety store until she got off work. They were married on January 23rd, 1960. Evelyn and Rex purchased and operated Oklahoma City Mattress and Felt Company in 1965.

She later enjoyed her retired life with yard work, serving in church, spending time with her family, and blessing others with her salad and dressing, peanut brittle and pumpkin rolls.

Everyone who knew her, knew she loved working outdoors and spending time with her family, especially those that called her Granny, and church family.  She will be remembered for her generosity, willingness to lend a helping hand and her quick wit. “Kill them with kindness” is a phrase she often spoke that we will carry on.

She was proud of her Native American heritage as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Evelyn was a life time member of Waterloo Road Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending days at the church with other ladies cooking for the men and their families that worked tirelessly to bring their dream of Waterloo Road Baptist church to reality.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Rex; sisters Marcella Johnson and Jessie Jeffers; brothers Bobbie Roberson and Ronnie Roberson.

Evelyn is survived by her God given daughter/niece, Brenda Harris and husband Brian Harris of Edmond, OK; 3 grandchildren, Logan Archer and husband Jeremy; Taylor Harris and wife Sydney; Tanner Harris and fiancé Charlie Warren; 3 great grandchildren, Elliette and Jaxxon Archer and Scottie Lynn Harris, arriving in August 2024 to Taylor and Sydney Harris. Sisters, Sherry Effinger and Kelly Woods and husband Jack of Harrah, OK and many other nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family and very dear friends.

Memorial Services will take place on Saturday 27, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Waterloo Road Baptist Church. Inurnment of Rex and Evelyn will take place following the service at 1:00 p.m. at Memory Lane Cemetery in Harrah, Oklahoma.
