1930-2020Hurt, Ellen

On Thursday, May 21, 2020. Ellen Orlena Hurt, loving heart of our family, passed away at the age of 90.

Ellen was born on April 30, 1930, in Modesto, California to Esmond and Wayve Weber. She attended school in Broxton and Anadarko and graduated from high school back in California where she spent her senior year. Ellen often said that she and her aunts basically made up the basketball team when she was in high school. They were a family that truly experienced the Depression Era, the Oklahoma dust storms, and the migration of farm workers to California and then back to Oklahoma. These experiences helped form her faith, compassionate spirit, resiliency, and work ethic.

She married Edward (Speedy) Hurt on December 7, 1951. They had one daughter, Lisa. Ellen worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell before becoming a mother and a homemaker. After her daughter was raised, she returned to work teaming up with her husband, sister, and brother-in-law at Allen’s Western Wear in downtown Anadarko. She always enjoyed working with the public.

Ellen had a passion for her church, baking, and family. She was known for her pecan pies. She enjoyed attending Falls Creek serving as a cook for campers. She also taught Sunday School and served her local church bodies in many capacities. She always had a big batch of brownies and chocolate chip cookies ready for the grandkids and great grandkids, who were the lights of her life.

She was known for her quick wit and infectious smile. She had such a kind and compassionate spirit and was very special to all that encountered her.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Speedy, her father and mother, as well as her sister, Marie, and brother, Doyle. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, John. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Robbie, Lindsay and husband Mical, Nathan and wife Rachel. She has two great-grandchildren, Teagan, and Maddox. Additional family include numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 27th from 12-8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held in Anadarko at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Revive Church Edmond, Oklahoma.
