Edwin M. Bruce

Edwin M Bruce

December 5, 1934 – May 28, 2023

Edwin Murville Bruce was born on December 5, 1934, in El Reno, Oklahoma to Murville and Mabel Bruce. His parents and his sister Rosa later moved to Edmond and purchased two sections of land which he called the farm.   He worked the farm by herding the cattle, milking the cows, feeding the chickens, and gathering eggs to sell in town.  He worked at the cafe in downtown Edmond that his parents had started.  He attended Russell Dougherty Elementary, Edmond High School, and Central State College getting an accounting degree.  During high school and college, he worked at Safeway and was sought out by customers that wanted him to ring up their groceries due to the speed of him using the ten key and memory of prices.  His roommate during this time was Raymond Hicks, his best friend, which later was his best man at Ed and Sonja’s wedding.

Ed was drafted in the Army in 1957, then served in the Air Force Reserve for 6 years.  While serving his time in the Army, he met Sonja on a blind date and they later married March 14, 1959.  He and his new bride moved to Atlanta, Albuquerque, and Denver.  In their 4th year of marriage, they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma when he started working for OG&E.  He began as an accountant, then supervisor of AP, then later as a supervisor of general stores, having the responsibilities of procurement, inventory, and distribution of transformers, utility poles, and many other items required to keep the electricity flowing.  He retired after 32 years at OG&E.  Ed was a hard worker and was highly respected by his employees.

Ed was a loving and caring husband to Sonja and was always attentive to her needs.  He was a great father and always willing to help his children with their needs, whether it was physical labor or advice with life.  He called his advice, “Canned Speeches” and he gave many of them.  He loved to joke around with family and friends and would visit with anyone he met.  He enjoyed spending time outside, flower gardening, and being in his backyard.  He attended Henderson Hills Baptist Church and was church treasurer for some time where he made many life-long friends.  He also attended Metro Church and OKC Crossings Community Church which was his final church home.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Murville and Mabel Bruce and his sister Rosa Firkins.  Ed is survived by his wife Sonja Bruce.  Children:  Mike Bruce and wife Lisa, Melanie Williamson and husband Charles.  Grandchildren:  John Williamson, James Bruce, Jacob Bruce, Josh Bruce and wife Sadie.  Brother in law:  Andy Coleman.  Nephews:  Don Firkins, Gary Firkins, Larry Firkins, Brian Coleman, Hamp Keahey, and Kelly Keahey.  Nieces:  Andria O’Donnell and Theresa Black.
