Eddie Joe “Joe” Megert, Jr.

Eddie Joe “Joe” Megert, Jr.

1949 – 2025

Eddie Joe Megert Jr. was born in Clinton, Oklahoma to Eddie Joe and Orpa Megert on September 28, 1949, and went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 15, 2025, at the age of seventy-five years. Joe was the third of three boys born to that marriage. He was 20 months old when his biological father was killed by lightning as he worked in the hay field. His mother was then married to Alvin Epp when Joe was three years old. Joe’s childhood was spent on the family farm near Corn, OK.

Joe and his two brothers would sit at their mother’s knee every evening as she would read Christian adventure series books to them. Joe was convicted of the need to invite Christ to be his personal Savior after one of those nightly readings from a Danny Orlis book. He was later baptized and became a member of the Corn Mennonite Brethren Church.

He graduated high school from Corn Bible Academy in Corn, Oklahoma, where he met the love of his life, Elaine, and in 1971, he graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Business Management.

Joe and Elaine were married on July 27, 1968, at the First Baptist Church in Hooker, OK. They made their first home in Corn, where they lived for several years before moving to Liberal, Kansas. They spent happy years raising their family in both Liberal and Hugoton, Kansas. In 2010, they moved to Scott City, Kansas, where Joe finished his career in the cattle feeding industry until he retired at the end of 2017 from HRC Feed Yards LLC as manager/part owner. He and Elaine moved to Edmond, OK, where they were joyfully living their retired life. Joe and Elaine were happily married for 56 years.

Joe was known for his kindness, hard work ethic, sense of humor, spiritual leadership, love of motorcycles (actually almost all shiny things with motors and wheels), and for his beautiful tenor voice. No matter where he lived, Joe sang in choirs and men’s quartets, and he was also in a mixed trio with Elaine and her sister, Marcie Isaac, for many years. He lovingly cared for his Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chloe, Sadie, and Bridgett, and was a devoted husband and father who cherished his family as a servant leader. Joe also embraced caring for his 103-year-old mother, managing her financial and health care needs. Joe made frequent trips to Corn to visit her. If the weather was even somewhat accommodating, he would make the trip on one of his Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Those left to mourn Joe’s passing are his wife of the home, three children: daughters Audra Christensen and husband Chad of Wichita, KS; Amber Frey and husband Aaron of Andover, KS; son Eddie Joe ’E.J.’ Megert III of Edmond, OK; seven grandchildren: Blake, Shane, and Cale Frey, Paige and Leah Christensen, Everett Megert, and Rekhel Clay; and one great granddaughter, Drue Clay. Also surviving Joe are his mother, Orpa Megert Epp, Corn, OK; brother, Ronald Wayne and his wife, Mary Beth Megert of Lady Lake, FL; and sister-in-law, Dr. Diann Megert of Walters, OK. Joe was eagerly anticipating the coming marriages of son E.J. to Stacy Torres, which will add her and her sons Pierce and Jace to the family, and the marriage of granddaughter Paige to Dakota Cook, adding yet one more. He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Joe Megert; step father, Alvin Jacob Epp; and brother Larry Gene Megert.

Memorial gifts given in Joe’s honor may be made to Crossings Community Church designated for the Voice of Hope Initiative, and sent to Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S Kelly Ave, Edmond, OK 73003.

Services will be held Friday, January 31, 2025, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Crossings Community Church Chapel. The service will be live streamed. Please follow this link to watch: https://vimeo.com/event/4862738/3a88e0acf9

Elaine and families know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers. A really good man has left us to live in his heavenly home prepared for him. He will be so missed and remembered for his love and goodness that he so perfectly demonstrated. May you feel peace from God and love from family and friends as you adjust to his absence.

Praying for God’s nearness and provision over Elaine and her family. I was privileged to sing with Joe in the Voices of Crossings Choir. Joe was a source of strong faith, encouragement, and leadership, with his influence being felt well beyond the Care Group he led but across the entire Choir. He and Elaine were constant “Prayer Warriors” for me and many others. Specifically, Joe made a difference in my life by praying for me and helping me cope with the loss of my wife, beating prostate cancer, and so many other challenges that we faced together as brothers in Christ. I am honored to have served in the Worship Ministry along Joe’s side weekly for years. On one occasion in 2016, I remember my wife and I sitting at a table attending a church dinner with Joe and Elaine when everyone started singing a well-known hymn. Although I do not recall the hymn we sang, what I do recall was that Elaine took the soprano part, I was on the tenor part, and Joe added a third harmony part out of thin air to create a moment in my memory that simply touched my soul. Joe’s legacy will live on in me and all those he touched and cared about. Every time I recall moments like this, where Joe shared his gifts and talents so freely with those around him, it brings a sense of fresh joy and a smile anew.
