It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of the Almighty God that we announce the passing of Professor Donald Effiong Mbosowo, who left us peacefully on October 7, 2024, after battling with illness.

Professor Mbosowo was a Revered Educator, Scholar, and Mentor, whose passion for knowledge and dedication to his students transformed countless lives. As a 77-year-old man, born in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, he pursued his academic journey with fervor, earning a master’s degree from University of Nebraska and a PhD from Kansas State University. Over the years, he became a prominent figure in the fields of sociology, criminology, and criminal justice, contributing significantly to research and education.

Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Mbosowo served as a faculty member at University of Jos, Nigeria, Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, Mississippi, and Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma, where he inspired generations of students with his engaging lectures and unwavering support. He was known for his kindness, intellect, and commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment. He also taught criminology, policies, and strategies to police officers, governors, and other government officials at Nigerian Institute of Policies and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) at Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. His influence extended beyond the classroom; he was a passionate advocate for justice for the oppressed and dedicated much of his time to the church and community service.

Professor Mbosowo is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Dr. Mary Mbosowo, and their children, Dr. Henny Mbosowo, Mr. Ediomo Mbosowo, and Mr. Etido Mbosowo. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Inemesit Mbosowo, and his grandchildren, Enobong Mbosowo, Edidiong Mbosowo, Otobong Mbosowo, and Ubong Mbosowo. He will be remembered not only for his academic achievements but also for his warm spirit, sense of humor, and the profound impact he had on those who knew him.

Public viewing will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am before the memorial service at Matthews Funeral Home.

A memorial service to celebrate Professor Mbosowo’s life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Matthews Funeral Homes & Cremation, 601 S. Kelly Ave, Edmond, OK 73003 at 10 am with interment to follow at Gracelawn Cemetery Edmond, OK.

As we mourn the loss of an extraordinary individual, we take comfort in the legacy of knowledge, compassion, and inspiration that he leaves behind. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
