1935-2018
Dorothy (Lucas) Penland, a long-time resident of Edmond, OK passed away peacefully January 19, 2018. Dorothy was born January 31, 1935 in Okemah, OK to Idell and Herb Lucas. She spent most of her younger years in Okemah. The family moved to Oklahoma City where she attended Oklahoma City schools and graduated from Classen High school in 1953.
In 1956 she married the love of her life, Edwin Penland. They were married for 61 years, most spent in Edmond, OK where they lovingly raised their two children, Brenda and David. They were charter members of Henderson Hills Baptist Church and later members of Quail Springs Baptist Church. Dorothy worked in Edmond for Otasco, McCalls, and Ralston Purina where she retired in 1995 after 22 years. She and Edwin moved into the Bradford Village retirement community in Edmond in 2015.
Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother. She loved being a Grandmother and Great-grandmother. Dorothy was a great sister, aunt and friend to many. Dorothy loved to cook for her family and all enjoyed her biscuits and gravy, which became a family tradition. After retirement Dorothy and Edwin enjoyed traveling, most recently in their RV. They formed some wonderful friendships in their travel club, Frontier Sam’s Club and with other “winter Texans”. Only 25 days ago Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Steve Peterson, her son and daughter-in-law, David and Jennifer Penland, all of Edmond, four grandchildren: Andrew (Brandy) Penland, Sarah (Dane) Wilber, Lucas Peterson and Seth Peterson, and four great-grandchildren: Caroline and Anderson Wilber and Charlie Mae and Remington Lou Penland. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, Idell Lucas and Herb Lucas, and sisters: Jean Goff and Lois Head and brothers: Billy Lucas and Glynn Lucas.
Special thanks to her wonderful and devoted caregiver, Diana Dobkins of Edmond, the staff at Bradford Village and Faith Hospice. Dorothy is rejoicing in heaven as she is reunited with her devoted husband, Edwin and many other family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Faith Hospice, 921 NW 164th St Suite B, Edmond, OK 73013 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6601 N.
