1931-2019
Doris Malone Paxton Johnston, or Malone, was born August 20, 1931 in Jester, Oklahoma to Joe and Nora Paxton. She passed away June 4, 2019 at Bradford Nursing Home, Edmond, Oklahoma. Malone had a long battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and is no longer suffering from this disease.
Malone grew up in the depression years and by the young age of eight, learned how to knit and sew and continued this craft into her eighties. After graduating high school at Lake Valley High in southwestern Oklahoma, she married Don Johnston at age 18 in Clinton, Oklahoma and had two sons, Darrel Johnston and Gary Johnston. After a number of years as a stay at home mom, she had the itch to return to school, earned her Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in Elementary Education, and a Master’s degree in History from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Malone taught elementary school in Lubbock, Texas, Dallas, and DeSoto, Texas spanning a 13-year teaching career, resigned from the teaching profession, and began a new career at the Dallas Market Center and finished her working career with American Airlines. Malone was an avid bowler in her younger years, took up golfing in her mid-forties, played bridge with a number of bridge groups, and continued her knitting until she could no longer remember how. As her memory declined so did her ability to do the things she loved.
Malone is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Johnston and her oldest son, Darrel Johnston. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Donna Johnston, her grandchildren: Robert Johnston (wife Dollie), Audra Johnston Abseck (husband Carl), Katherine Johnston Walker (husband Jeff) and Kelsey Johnston. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel in Edmond, OK.
Sending my condolences for Mrs. Malone Johnston. She was my favorite teacher and friend.
