Donald P. Maxwell
Don Maxwell went to meet his Heavenly Lord on August 12, 2020. He was born in Oklahoma City on September 8, 1932, to Robert Cato Maxwell, Sr., and Della Laverda Power. Early in his childhood he and the Maxwell family moved to Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, where his father owned and operated Maxwell Motors, the Ford Lincoln Mercury Dealership. Don played football, played the clarinet in the high school marching band, and participated in the drama club. After graduating from Pauls Valley High School he attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity. During college he was an intramural boxer, a member of the Golden Gloves organization winning several medals. He even fought a couple of professional bouts before deciding to join the Marines. It was during his final year of college at OU that Don met and married Beverly Sue Schilling of Oklahoma City in 1953. He graduated from OU in 1953 and signed up to be a U.S. Marine. After boot camp and attaining the rank of private he was recommended and qualified for officer’s training school in Quantico, Virginia. He served as a First Lieutenant commanding an artillery and rocket company at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. It was at Fort Sill that his son, Donald Power Maxwell, Jr., M.D., was born in 1955. He later served at Thousand Oaks and Camp Pendleton where his daughter, Melody Maxwell-Mellick was born at Oceanside California in 1956. After serving his tour in the Marine Corp he moved back to Oklahoma City where he was employed at the Oklahoma Publishing Company. He then joined his brother Robert Cato Maxwell Jr and father in operating Maxwell Motors, the car dealership in Pauls Valley. Marisa Maxwell-Crowl was born in 1958 in Pauls Valley. In Pauls Valley he was an active and well respected business man, active in the Kiwanis Club and many other service organizations in the area. He was a member of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in Pauls Valley. He met Reverent Foy Conrad, the pastor of the Methodist Church in Pauls Valley and became very active in spreading God’s Word thru evangelism and witnessing his personal journey in life others. He was also very active with Dr. Bill Bright in Campus Crusade for Christ , Promise Keepers and several Christian outreach programs.
He sold his portion of Maxwell Motors in the mid 1970s and moved to Hawaii for several years. In the early 1980s he moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, and became the comptroller for Eskridge Motor Company until he retired. He became very active in MetroChurch led by Dr. Richard Hogue. He continued his spiritual growth and active evangelism during this time. Over the last few years he has been an active member of the Fairview Baptist Church led by Pastor Paul Blair. He continued to be active even when his medical problems made it difficult to attend church, he still was able to make this a priority in his life. He continued his entire life as a man of principle and integrity. He was often asked for his opinion and advice on not only business matters, but on personal and religious questions by not only his family but many of his friends. Despite several medical problems that hindered his physical ability to continue his beloved sport of golf, he persevered through many difficult times in the later years, never giving up his counseling of his family and concerns for all and his priority to take care of others first.
He and his wife travelled to Hawaii several times, but their trip to the Holy Land with the Benny Hinn ministries and to St Andrews Golf Course in Scotland were some of his most treasured memories.
He is survived by his wife Beverly of Edmond, Oklahoma, son Dr. Donald Maxwell and wife Karen of Edmond, daughter Melody and husband Mark Mellick of Los Angeles and Honolulu, Hawaii, and daughter Marisa and husband Todd Crowl of Edmond, Oklahoma. Thank you so much being being there for us those last couple of years. You have such a sweet heart. And your quiet the fisherman!
Some of my very earliest childhood memories included my Uncle Don and Maxwell family. Uncle Don was always engaging and playful to us kids. His kind heart, friendly demeanor and love were great gifts to us as children. He frequently led family dinners in prayer and was always able to provide spiritual offerings and discussions. The lessons and legacy he left behind will be with us all. He led by example and always left the log pile a little higher.
In loving memory.
Uncle Don’s loving demeanor and gentle ways will always be etched in my memory.
What a great man, will miss him a lot especially the OU Football season. May God bless his beautiful family. Love and prayers. Shirley cox
