David Bowden Duck

1938-2024

David Bowden Duck, born on January 18, 1938, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024. He was the cherished son of James and Gwendolyn Duck and was raised on the north side of Tulsa at the foot of Reservoir Hill, with his brothers, Jimmy and John.

David is survived by his wife Karen Duck, his children Kimberly Duck and Brandon Duck, his younger brother John Duck and his wife Cheryl, 4 granddaughters, Addie, McKinzie, Ainsley and Aylee and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gwendolyn Duck and his older brother Jimmy Duck. David was a loving father, grandfather and husband.

David’s early years were marked by his education in Tulsa, attending John Burrows Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, and graduating from Tulsa Central High School in 1956. It was during his high school days that he forged lifelong friendships with Lee Russell, Charlie Moore, and Ken Selby, united by their love for sports. David was an accomplished baseball player and had the privilege to play on the Coca Cola American Legion team, alongside other standout players from Tulsa.

After high school, David attended the University of Oklahoma, where his passion for sports continued to grow.  He became a dedicated fan of Sooner football and attended countless games.  He particularly enjoyed the historic OU/Texas rivalry, attending his first game in 1956.  In 2013 he was honored during the Baylor game for his unwavering support for Oklahoma athletics, a testament to his lifelong dedication to the Sooners.

Beyond his love for football, David was an avid fan of both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State softball and very much enjoyed following their success.  He was especially proud to watch the many kids that he had previously coached.   Golf was another of David’s great passions, nurtured since his youth, and he relished the camaraderie and challenge the sport offered throughout his life.

Professionally, David was a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating a Mr. Rooter franchise. His business acumen and dedication allowed him to build a thriving enterprise, impacting both his community and those he employed.

However, David’s proudest role was that of a loving father and grandfather. He was deeply involved in his children’s lives, coaching Kimberly’s teams and being Brandon’s biggest supporter in all endeavors. Whether cheering from the sidelines or attending countless practices, David’s unwavering encouragement and presence left an indelible mark on his family’s hearts.

David Bowden Duck will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his family, friendships, and community involvement. His passing leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at the graveside at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, OK at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Dave was my brother in law and was always very supportive of everything we did. He was was the most generous person I have ever known. He was always taking care of other people. I have never known anyone like him. He was always there for people
If you had a real need he wanted to help and he did time after time. He watched most of the OU football games with us and was always happy when they won. We will miss him terribly. May he rest in Peace.

I met David back in the 1980’s when I moved back to Oklahoma City. I had an issue with the plumbing at our new home and my uncle who lived near by recommended Mr. Rooter. The rest is history. David was our plumber from then on. But thats just part of the story. David became a good friend. He always had time to speak to you and I always looked forward to our conversations. Through the years I got to know many of his employees and I would always tell them they had a great boss. David was a man of high integrity and rigorous honesty. That was reflected in his many loyal clients, me being one, through the years. —— Rest in peace David. Thanks for all you did for me. You will be greatly missed.

8 years ago I started to work at Cole, Paine & Carlin and became the account manager on Dave’s business insurance needs. We instantly became friends over the many phone calls with insurance changes and certificates needing to be sent to his vendors. Everytime I would see his name pop up on my caller ID it was always a pleasure to answer his phone call becuase I knew he would get right to the point of what he needed and be one of the most pleasant conversations I would have that day. I will miss that voice saying “Yeah Terri its Dave Duck I need a certificate of insurance please”. He always treated me with respect in all aspects of business and that is rare this days. We will miss you at CPC Dave. Fly high with the angels sweet man!

So sorry that I missed David’s memorial service today. He was a very good friend of Putnam City Optimist Girls Softball for
many, many years. I could always call David when there was a problem at the softball fields, he would be right out there. I will miss talking to him about all the teams, players and games that he help coach at our park. David knew his
softball and I’m sure he has already started a softball league in Heaven. David, Let me help you when I get there.

  6. I have known David since Junior High. We became friends after attending the memorial service of our mutual friend Charlie Moore in Talequah. We attended numerous sporting events together, including a few of his niece’s Dartmouth University lacrosse games and six OU- Texas football games. We watched countless sports on TV, but I think our favorite activity was eating out. We tried all the restaurants in Oklahoma recommended by the Oklahoma Today TV show. David got me interested in OU softball, and I am an avid fan now. He had many stories that he loved to recount, and I never tired of hearing them. Dave was a big man with a big heart. I was lucky to have him as a friend, and I will cherish his memory.

David was a good old-fashioned, honest businessman. He was in business to make a profit, but he never over-charged or sold unnecessary services. I first started using Mr. Rooter in 1987. They were reliable and accomplished. I knew David’s voice, and he recognized my address. He almost always provided me with same day service. I trusted him because he was trustworthy. I will greatly miss him!
