Daniel L. Holmgren

1937 – 2023

DANIEL LUNDEEN HOLMGREN

Daniel “Dan” Lundeen Holmgren, 86, of Edmond, Oklahoma returned to his heavenly home on Friday, October 6, 2023, after a brave battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Dan was born on June 18, 1937 in San Francisco, California to Mary Lee (Steele) Holmgren and Clayton Frank Holmgren. He grew up in Oceanside, California. In 1945, 8 year old Dan noticed a cute blonde southern belle named Mary Margret Tuten who had just moved in a couple houses down from him. Although Mary dashed Dan’s early attempts to get her to notice him, he was determined and waited eleven more years before asking Mary out on their first date.

During his high school years, Dan was a paper boy for the Oceanside Blade Tribune, ran track, and played football and basketball. Dan excelled at basketball and was the starting center for his high school varsity team. His senior year, he was awarded “MVP” of the year. Dan graduated from Oceanside High School in 1955. After a year and half of junior college, Dan and Mary started dating and their romance blossomed.  Dan decided to enlist in the Navy where he quickly advanced to submarine school in New London, Connecticut. After completing sub school, Dan was assigned to the USS Tang home port Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Before leaving for Pearl Harbor, Dan asked Mary to marry him.  Dan quickly passed his Dolphin’s qualification test during his first tour. After six months at sea, Dan had accumulated two weeks leave and put in a request to head back home to marry his girl. After a couple of delayed leave request, Dan and Mary married on October 31, 1958.

After serving four years in the Navy, Dan received an honorable discharge. Upon returning to San Diego, California, he began his civil career at General Dynamics while attending Mesa Community College in the evening. After two years, Dan went to work for Honeywell as a quality control supervisor. In 1966, he graduated from San Diego State University with honors earning a B.S. Electrical Engineering degree. Dan continued to work in the computer industry at Honeywell, Magnetic Peripherals Incorporated, Control Data, and Seagate developing computer hard drives. During his time at Seagate as a quality control product manager, he traveled the world helping customers resolve their computer problems. In 2000, Dan retired from Seagate and took up golf and sailing as his new hobbies. During his retirement, Dan continued to sharpen his wood working skills and recently built a guitar. He volunteered many hours at Faith Bible from building furniture for the children’s department to delivering church bulletins to shut-in members. Dan loved traveling with Mary, family gatherings, and supporting his grandchildren in their various interest.

Dan is survived by his wife, Mary Margret (Tuten) Holmgren; his children Lawrence “Scott” Holmgren and wife Suzanne Holmgren of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Laura Lynn (Holmgren) Ganz and husband Marc Ganz of Edmond, Oklahoma; his grandchildren Taylor (Holmgren) Cortez and husband Matt Cortez of Euless, Texas, Drayton Ganz of Edmond, Oklahoma, Sara (Holmgren) Lilley and husband Bryce Lilley of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Christopher Ganz and wife Jordan Ganz of Edmond, Oklahoma; and great grandchildren, Cameron Cortez, Conor Holmgren-Lilley, and Jude Ganz.

He is preceded in death by his mother Mary Lee (Steele) Holmgren, father Clayton Frank Holmgren, sister Kay Kilgore Suster, and brother Michael Lee Holmgren.

A celebration of Dan’s life will be held on October 13, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Bible Church, 600 N. Coltrane, Edmond, Oklahoma, officiated by Pastor Jay Risner.
