Clyde Edwin Johnson
1935 – 2024
Clyde Edwin Johnson, 89, of Edmond, Oklahoma slipped into the arms of Jesus on Friday, December 27, 2024. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on January 18, 1935, to Charles and Hazel Marie Johnson. When he was five years old, his father died, and he was sent to Catholic boarding school for a year. He then went to live on a farm when his mother married Bill Henninger, who Clyde treasured as a very good step-father who took him hunting and fishing.
Clyde was a journeyman carpenter in his early adult years and then headed into ministry. He was a 1966 graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virgina, and attended Asbury and Lexington Theological Seminaries in Kentucky.
On July 24, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Ellen Ames. The two served Christ and others in their nearly 40 years in ministry in five states, including serving three or more churches concurrently. His ministry focused on administration and pastoral care. He endeavored to preach God’s desire for us to love and serve each other and our neighbors and he encouraged responsible financial management and building maintenance.
Clyde had two hobbies that he immensely enjoyed. He had and exhibited a Bible collection with nearly 300 different versions and printings of Bibles and biblical texts. That collection now resides at the Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He also did genealogy research for his family and Joyce’s family.
In his later years, Clyde resided in a retirement community, where he was known for his love of working puzzles and for his bright smile and grateful heart.
Clyde was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce. He is survived by his daughters Rebecca Brennan of Linn, TX, and Suzanne (Keith) Callihan of Guthrie, OK; grandchildren Matthew (Casey) Brennan of Three Rivers, MI, Elizabeth (Joe) Paris of Elkhart, IN, and Sarah Callihan of Liverpool, NY; great-grandchildren Daniel Brennan and Liam Brennan of Three Rivers, MI and Seth Paris of Elkhart, IN.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM CST on Saturday, January 4, at the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond with Clyde’s nephew and retired pastor, Les Potts, officiating.
