Carlene Maddox
1934-2023
Carlene Maddox passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 89. She was born on June 17, 1934, to Matthew and Hattie Roberts in Guthrie, OK. Her peaceful and joyful demeanor could be attributed to the faith she lived, as she was a devoted Christian who attended church regularly and taught Sunday school most of her life. She even requested to attend church as she was convalescing in recent years.
Carlene’s life was a testament to the selflessness and love that she had for others. Upon graduating from high school, she moved to California to provide for her siblings back in Guthrie. She lived with her beloved aunt, Ora Franklin, and helped her in raising the children. As time passed by, she got married to J.P. Maddox and moved with him to Santa Monica, where she dedicated her career to caring for others as a licensed vocational nurse. She was often described as demonstrating kindness, patience, and empathy, just as she had in her personal life.
Carlene Maddox had a passion for singing and reading the Bible. She often sang with her friends and family as song helped her reminisce about growing up in Guthrie. Her joy in singing reflected the deep love that she had for her family and friends, whom she cherished dearly.
One of the greatest reflections of Carlene’s love and care was in her decision to raise both her stepdaughter, Janell Renee Maddox, and niece, Antoinette Roberts, caring for them from adolescence to adulthood. She was a second mother to both women, always providing unwavering support and guidance throughout their lives. Her love for Janell and Antoinette was one of the most precious gifts she gave to her family, and to them, a testament to her limitless heart and boundless generosity.
Carlene Maddox is survived by her bonus daughters, Janell Renee Maddox and Antoinette Roberts, three siblings Sherman Dean Roberts of Los Angeles, CA; Reasa Dewberry of Kansas City, MO; and Catherine Jordan of Edmond, OK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who all love her dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents Matthew and Hattie Roberts, aunt Ora Franklin, husband of forty years J.P. Maddox, siblings M.C. Stevenson, Fred Roberts, Roger L. Roberts, Shirley J. Jackson, and Laura M. Roberts.
Carlene leaves behind a legacy of kindness, grace, and compassion. She will forever be remembered for her love of God, her wisdom, her patience, and her selflessness. She has touched the lives of so many, and her memory will continue to inspire generations to come. Carlene Maddox may have left this world, but her legacy of love and kindness will remain in our hearts forever.
